[edit]Hey, can you find some images for Charles C. Coleman (director) and George Stevens? Check out Coleman's assistant director films, it's like a what's what of Golden Hollywood masterpieces!♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:21, 22 November 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, no luck with Coleman?♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:22, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
Beautiful!♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:12, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
Are The Temptress images on my talk page up for deletion really not public domain? I thought most silent films were public domain.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:53, 24 November 2014 (UTC)
Not sure you can find any free media related to Meet The Flintstones? Can't believe it was missing!♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:25, 25 November 2014 (UTC)
Oh I know the characters are, I was thinking something like a group performing it or something, you know like an old jazz orchestra in the middle of playing it or something. Don't worry.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:01, 25 November 2014 (UTC)
There's a guitar arrangement on it which is extremely difficult technically! Started Me, Gangster, amazingly there seems to still be some missing films for Walsh who directed some masterpieces. If Me, Gangster is a patch on White Heat then I want to see it asap! A young Carole Lombard in it too! More here which could be added to both articles.♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:25, 25 November 2014 (UTC)
Nice on. I don't know about you but I love the look of films and actors from that period and like looking at old photographs and stills and lobby cards!!♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:48, 25 November 2014 (UTC)
I blue linked Café Montmartre, I wonder if this or something like it is obtainable. I'll have a look in newspaper.com tomorrow for more content. I love 1920s Los Angeles! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 23:15, 25 November 2014 (UTC)
Thankyou!!♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:48, 26 November 2014 (UTC)
Haha just watching Don Terry with Armida here. Rather good actually, less wooden than a young John Wayne during that period!. I'm a new fan of Armida, must check out more of her films. Small world, I started Border Romance and it turns out you uploaded a lobby card File:Border Romance lobby card.jpg last month with a color pic of Terry in the middle!♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:46, 26 November 2014 (UTC)
Go for it. I might try to see more films of Don Terry some time. There also seems to be a few missing ones by Raoul Walsh and Richard Thorpe from that period worth starting which would be good to get hold of pictures for. Thanks for all the work you do finding free images! I love looking at those old film magazines!!♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:26, 26 November 2014 (UTC)
By eerie coincidence Red Skelton's Hollywood star is outside Café Montmartre!♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:58, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
Can you find one for D. Ross Lederman?♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:54, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
Can you find an image for Sing While You Dance? The only fair use poster I can find is tiny. Perhaps a lobby card or something?♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:04, 1 December 2014 (UTC)
Are you looking at my User:Dr. Blofeld/Great films list or something :-) ? ♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:20, 1 December 2014 (UTC)
Request 2
[edit]Hi, I know you're quite good at uploading stuff from ebay so wondered if you could help. I wanted to add an image of The National to the article, but it would need to be trimmed and I'm not very good at doing that. Also I'm not sure where we stand with copyright. Can you help? Thanks, This is Paul (talk) 16:33, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
- That's really great and much appreciated, thanks. Never quite got why people panic so much over these things. Surely an image is ok as long as it gets added to an article. This is Paul (talk) 16:50, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
- Looks fantastic. Thanks again. :) This is Paul (talk) 17:10, 27 November 2014 (UTC)

Can you upload this to the commons (basically Districts of Hungary as of 2013) and see if you can find any photos for One Desire, no worries if not.♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:20, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
I did suspect it might have been. Thanks anyway!♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:46, 9 December 2014 (UTC)

Barrymore
[edit]Thanks for chipping in with comments on the Barrymore PR page. Could you run a check on those images where I've said I cannot find a US copyright? I'm sort of sure I was along the right lines, but I'd be happier if someone more experienced than I double checked it! Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 16:19, 10 December 2014 (UTC)

Dearie (1927)
[edit]Wow!, Congrats on that poster 'templated' if that's a proper word. I first saw that poster in a film book on silent and sound leading men over two decades ago. This was way before the internet but I remembered the poster and it sort of got me interested in lobby posters of the silent years. They are the best in style in my opinion. Thanks again for all the great work you do. Peace. Koplimek (talk) 01:05, 12 December 2014 (UTC)
- We hope, just to let you know I found the title of that book that I first saw the lobby poster to Dearie(1927). It's GREAT LOVERS OF THE MOVIES by Jane Mercer c.1975. I did a research of my library system and their copies are 'long gone' as I had expected. This is the book cover:

[edit]Hi We Hope, Can you see if you can find any free images of John Barrymore in Romeo and Juliet (1936 film)? I wouldn't mind dropping something into the JB article from that one, if you can. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 21:32, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
- Again: you are a star! Thanks so much for coming up with an excellent choice: I've added one of them to the article, which I hope to get to FAC in the not-too-distant future! Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 10:04, 15 December 2014 (UTC)

Robert Mitchum images
[edit]Hello there! I know you're probably super busy but you did such an awesome job on the Lauren Bacall images that I was wondering if you mind finding a few for Robert Mitchum, I hoping to have the same affect and get his filmography to FL status. [edit]Hitchcock copyright status
[edit]Hi. Hope you're well. I wonder if you can help me out. I'm unsure of the copyright status of films by Hitchcock and I want to use some images from them in a future article. On wikipedia they seem to all be "under public domain" as I see on the Alfred Hitchcock article but am not sure that's quite accurate. [[1]] This site (a wiki) seems to cover the relevant laws and seems to imply that all his films under copyright based on the 70 year after death rule for the UK. Could you clarify this for me? Johnny Mercer's Music Shop
[edit]As I was looking through some AFRS recordings online a few minutes ago, I spotted a couple of episodes of Johnny Mercer's Music Shop. They jogged my memory about your interest in the program. You may already have them, but if you don't, you can find the Aug. 2, 1944, and Aug. 3, 1944, episodes on this page at the Internet Archive.Eddie Blick (talk) 19:27, 2 January 2015 (UTC)
- I'm glad you shared that iformation with This is Paul. I had forgotten that you were collaborating with someone on the project. I enjoy Jo Stafford's singing, too. She had a beautiful voice. Since I wrote the note above, I have come across a couple of other items. YouTube has the September 6, 1944 episode of JMMS. I also found a Johnny Mercer Collection at the Georgia State University Library. You probably already know about that, but I thought I would mention it in case the material might be available through interlibrary loan.Eddie Blick (talk) 02:24, 3 January 2015 (UTC)
- I'm glad those two links were helpful. I'll try to keep my eyes open for more about Johnny Mercer and/or Lillian Randolph. If I see something, I'll pass it along.Eddie Blick (talk) 13:43, 3 January 2015 (UTC)
Waldorf Astoria
[edit]Hello! I've resumed working on this and will be getting to GA over the next week or two. I was wondering if some of the photos could be retrieved from here somehow. A lot of the photos are pre 1923 and should be PD, although being part of collections might be to warn people off! Can you also find any material in those old magazines on the original hotels?♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:59, 4 January 2015 (UTC)
If I can find enough material I think I'll create a separate article on the original hotel with a condensed summary in the main article, so any images you can find of the interior especially will prove useful!.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:22, 4 January 2015 (UTC)
That's amazing, thanks!♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:13, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
Johnny Mercer recordings
[edit]These are great, thanks for finding them. I just spend the last couple of hours listening to Johnny Mercer and some of the others, and also heard a couple of songs I didn't know. All of this will be a great help, I think. This is Paul (talk) 21:26, 4 January 2015 (UTC)

Gary Cooper peer review
[edit]Hello, We hope. Yesterday I created a peer review request for the Gary Cooper article that was promoted to GA last month. I know you were involved in recent reviews of the John Barrymore article and thought you might be interested in this one. If you have the time, please review the article and leave any feedback at the peer review page in preparation for FAC nomination. Regards, Bede735 (talk) 14:56, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for your help with the Gary Cooper images. Bede735 (talk) 11:24, 7 January 2015 (UTC)
Hello, We hope. I will be closing out the [Wikipedia:Peer review/Gary Cooper/archive1 Gary Cooper Peer Review] later his week or early next week and would appreciate if you could take one last look at a few of the open image questions, especially these:
- File:Gary Cooper 1903.jpg Done
- File:Gary Cooper 1926.jpg Done
- File:Gary Cooper in The Virginian 1929.jpg
- File:Lili Damita-Gary Cooper in Fighting Caravans.jpg Done
- File:Gary Cooper-Helen Hayes in A Farewell to Arms.jpg Done
Which years and sources should I search to determine the copyright status on these? I would love to keep these images, if possible. Thank you. Bede735 (talk) 15:09, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
Thanks again for all your help with the images. I ended up going with this new image for The Virginian. I also replaced the Saratoga Springs screen capture with this new image. That should take care of the images—at least until the FA review. Bede735 (talk) 22:34, 3 February 2015 (UTC)
I just wanted to let you know that I nominated the Gary Cooper article as a featured article candidate. I would very much appreciate any comments or suggestions when you have the time. Regards, Bede735 (talk) 00:49, 8 February 2015 (UTC)

re: Books
[edit]Thanks for the notification! I was not aware of that opportunity. I'll be glad to put in my request.Eddie Blick (talk) 03:11, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks, too, for the information about the newsletter. That sounds like a good resource. Newspapers and magazines sound interesting, so I'll see what I can find out about those. Do you know whether any subscriptions to databases of newspaper and/or magazine archives are available? I use Google's newspaper search function, and I recently found that the Chicago Tribune has a free search tool. I've thought about buying a subscription to Time magazine just so I can have access to the radio coverage from back issues.Eddie Blick (talk) 03:46, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for suggesting the newspaper waiting list. I pulled up the page, and I think the service would definitely be good for the kinds of articles that I write. I will try to post a request on there today in order to add my name to the list. I'm also going to post a request on the books page today. Last night after I read your message I found several titles that would be useful. Now I need to review the process for requesting them to be sure I do it correctly.Eddie Blick (talk) 15:49, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
JSTOR
[edit]Have you applied for the JSTOR Project? I came across that today, and I think some of the material there could be useful for old-time radio. I applied for it and thought I would mention it in case you hadn't heard about that project. I have also applied for the McFarland books and added my name to the list of requests for newspaper access. Thanks again for your help! Eddie Blick (talk) 19:45, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
Can you find any images (posters/lobby cards) for this?♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:16, 10 January 2015 (UTC)
Evening WH. Waldorf–Astoria (New York, 1893) taking shape now. Can you find some photos for Lucius M. Boomer and Louis Sherry and find the plan of the original Waldorf Hotel. We have the plan of the 1897 Astoria but not the 1893 Waldorf. Also any photos of dignitaries and old balls etc and business/royalty associates would be good! P.S. can you rename Category:Waldorf–Astoria (1897–1929) to Category:Waldorf–Astoria (1893–1929), the Waldorf was opened in 1893, the Astoria in 1897 when they merged!♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:26, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

How many more links do you think the article needs? Does Wikipedia have guidelines about numbers of recommended or required links per article? Eddie Blick (talk) 14:22, 10 January 2015 (UTC)

Jo Stafford on Club Fifteen
[edit]Today I heard a couple of episodes of Club Fifteen that featured Jo Stafford, and they reminded me of your interest in her singing. You may have already heard them, but in case you haven't you'll find one that leads off with her doing "Hawaiian War Chant" and one that leads off with her singing "Shrimp Boats." They are from the Old Time Radio Researchers Library's "Club Fifteen" collection. Some of the other episodes on that page may feature her, too. Eddie Blick (talk) 19:30, 12 January 2015 (UTC)
Congratulations and thanks

The fact was ... that actor Don Terry (pictured) was discovered by a Fox screenwriter at Café Montmartre? You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. There's efficient service for you :-) Can you find any images for the April in Paris Ball? It was attended by government people on occasions so I think there must be some PD pics available somewhere!♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:48, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
Just added info about the Maxwell tiff! You're great at finding things, I warmly welcome you to add what you can to the Waldorf main article from your earlier clips and help improve it. I'll definitely be getting it to GA soon enough, and it's really the sort of article which is worth it! It would be good to glean some info from newspapers from certain years in its history from newspapers.com and construct a more comprehensive history. I often find though that the Newspapers.com search engine isn't the best.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:19, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
Much appreciated, thankyou! Searching for the Waldorf and a year does seem to pick up more than my usual searches anyway! Yeha, any titbits that can be gleaned from various sources will help it. I don't intend taking it to FA though so it doesn't have to be "perfect". I would like to strengthen the history of it though before I nom for GA.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:33, 18 January 2015 (UTC)
Some mention here of a "Al Smith charity dinner". Can you find a bio photo for Henry Janeway Hardenbergh?♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:27, 18 January 2015 (UTC)
In the history of the main hotel article Waldorf Astoria New York can you find a source for the dead sea scrolls of 1954 and find a bit more on the IBM 1981 release at the Astoria and add it to the article? It's just about done now I think from my end, will give it a read and copyedit and nom tomorrow. Any outstanding scraps are welcome of course!♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:10, 19 January 2015 (UTC)
Much appreciated thanks! I've nommed for GA. The only other thing I see is that the 1980s to present of the history might be improved a little, can you find anything on that and the 1948 LP record release?♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:09, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
That's OK thanks. The Ritz London and Meryl Streep are my next projects, so may need some image assistance when I come to it. :-)♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:05, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

Interesting site of online material
[edit]You may already know about this, but I just discovered The Online Books Page at the University of Pennsylvania. I haven't seen anything yet that I can use, but it has such a wide variety of resources that I thought I would pass it along in case you might find something useful. Eddie Blick (talk) 03:01, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for your note today. Don't feel bad about the delay. Things like that happen to me, too. I often move other things to the back burner while I concentrate on one project. I haven't done anything more with the Penn site either. I just wanted to mention it in case it might prove useful to you or to someone you know. By the way, My McFarland books came today via email. Thanks again for telling me about them.
- I'm glad you mentioned The Lantern. I have been using it, but with a different interface. Media History Digital Library provides a search box in the upper right part of the page, and the search goes to The Lantern. I had not seen the interface that your link provides. It will be good for browsing as opposed to searching. I like to do both at times. Eddie Blick (talk) 03:21, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

Hullo. can you check the interior images for the house, I'm pretty sure they're not really PD based on the life of the photographer and should probably be deleted. Jo Stafford Show on radio
[edit]Are you familiar with the Jo Stafford Show on ABC radio? I came across it in an article in Broadcasting ("ABC Is Replacing Eight Sustainers, page 74.). Apparently it was to begin Nov. 11, 1948, and be sponsored by Revere Camera Co. I couldn't find any episodes in either the Internet Archive or Old Time Radio Researchers Library. Eddie Blick (talk) 02:46, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the follow-up on Jo Stafford's program. I wasn't aware of that. It would be nice if more recordings of old radio shows had survived, but I'm glad that we have those that are available. I suppose people back then didn't realize that future generations would be interested in hearing old programs. One article I read when I was working on my article on electrical transcriptions pointed out how surviving transcriptions helped to preserve OTR. It noted that when magnetic tape began to replace ETs, the tapes were usually erased and re-used, forever destroying the programs that they had held. Eddie Blick (talk) 15:02, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
Hi, can you find a free image of him? Seems an interesting character, he was responsible for keeping the private lives of the film stars hush hush!! Worth it because he'll be under scrutiny this time next year as they're making a film based on him.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:21, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
New source for back issues of Billboard
[edit]Eddie Blick (talk) 03:12, 2 February 2015 (UTC)When finished, this page will have essentially all issues of Billboard from the late 40s to 2010. These are the issues the magazine has released into the public domain including Google Books
We are adding a few unique features. 1. Search by year and decade 2. Chart collections for each year.
3. Easy readability via PDF technology and scans with greater quality than Google
- Thanks for the tip about unz.org. It looks interesting, and I look forward to trying it. Have you seen or heard anything about earlier issues of Billboard? I noticed that the ones at American Radio History begin with Volume 54, as do those at Google Books. I wonder why the company would not make earlier issues available as public domain, too. Eddie Blick (talk) 20:21, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
- Back to Billboard on ARH ... I have found that I can highlight text on a page, then copy and paste it into Wikipedia (or elsewhere, of course). You might already know that technique, but I didn't realize it would work until I tried it. It's great for using a direct quotation from the magazine. Eddie Blick (talk) 02:52, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
LO
[edit]HI, I was wondering if you could crop File:Laurence Olivier Joan Fontaine Rebecca.JPG and shading out Joan in the same grey background as the rest. I was wondering how it might look as a portrait by itself. It's difficult because of the hand and her ear/face but I think it is possible to crop out the upper profile due to the size of the image and to shade her out of it. Something like File:Laurence Olivier 1940.jpg but with the hands shaded out in black and her shaded out in grey.♦ Dr. Blofeld 23:32, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
Nah, I kind of knew you'd mention the lab, and I don't think Schro and Tim are too keen on a staged image anyway so it would probably be a waste of time. I've asked more than enough of you of late, so I'll give you a rest now :-)♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:36, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

"Archived from the original"
[edit]Have any of your citations been changed to "Archived from the original ..."? A few minutes ago I noticed that several citations (such as numbers 80-85) that I had entered on 1948 in radio now have "Archived from the original" with the date the archiving occurred. I don't have any objection to it, but I'm curious about a) why it happened and b) why only a relative few were changed. Eddie Blick (talk) 03:39, 8 February 2015 (UTC)
Looks in very good shape WH. How well researched do you think it is? I may look into getting it up to GA tomorrow.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:41, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
It ought to go in the infobox really. Perhaps ask User:Frietjes to add a logo parameter?♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:14, 12 February 2015 (UTC)
Have you ever considered using Template:Sfn? I find it easier, and then you can also use Template:Efn for notes instead of the hash thingy. All the books need to go in the bibliography rather than citation notes.♦ Dr. Blofeld 23:10, 12 February 2015 (UTC)
It's cleaner I think as it not only saves add tags to refs to multiply, it does it automatically, but it also connects straight to the book when clicked, useful for articles with big bibliographies in finding them. Where is the Blumenthal source? I see the NYT but you've cited like page 100 odd. Is it a book? If so it needs to be in the bibliography!♦ Dr. Blofeld 23:25, 12 February 2015 (UTC)
Scratch that, I see it now :-) I'll do an sfn example for you to copy as I'm logging off now.♦ Dr. Blofeld 23:26, 12 February 2015 (UTC)
Can you reword "Those who were snubbed did not always depart quietly. When Jack Benny invited long-time friend, writer and performer Goodman Ace to lunch with him at the Stork, Ace arrived at the club first and received the "cold shoulder" because he was not recognized by the staff. When Benny arrived and asked for Ace, he was told that he "became tired of waiting and left". Soon Ace's mailbox was full of messages from the Stork, which he proceeded to answer. Their message about the club's wonderful air conditioning brought a response from Ace that after having received an icy reception there, he was well aware of the climate. Billingsley responded with a gift of some bow ties; Ace answered that he needed some socks to match so he might be turned down there again in style" -It reads a bit subjectively and not quite clear to me.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:22, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
I had a look in google books and you seem to have most of it covered. I think the content is fine for GA now but in places the prose needs some work as it reads a bit too much like a narrative in parts. Some elaboration in the celebrities section on some of them and their involvement with the club might be useful too.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:46, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
You mean citing the same book page more than once in different places? Just the same sfn|author|year|page and it'll automatically recognize that it's the same page and will bunch them for you without worrying about ref tags. It's clever like that :-). For notes you can use Template:Efn which will work if there is a given note list in the notes I think. See the Althorp article for instance. Most of the Stork article is very good, but there are some spots like the Goodman Ace one where it reads a little like a story and not always easy to follow. Doesn't need much work now. The problem is that there'll be some mention of the club in masses of books but finding them in the google book search more difficult. I had to find the bit about Bogart for instance by a special word search!♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:40, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
I think restaurants/club names should be in italics. What do you think? I began putting some in italics, but you might feel differently. They should probably all be consistent of course either way.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:44, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
Is there anything more on its architecture and rooms/facilities? How big was it, floor space, when was it renovated etc?♦ Dr. Blofeld#
I just think the Goodman Ace part needs rewording/cutting now, and it should be pretty much OK for GA.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:25, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
Free images of celebs at the club would be good! - perhaps we could do a four image thing like in the Waldorf 1893 article. The part I most misunderstood was "Their message about the club's wonderful air conditioning brought a response from Ace that after having received an icy reception there, he was well aware of the climate", no idea what you mean here, I was puzzled why the club would send him messages about the wonderful air conditioning and what he really meant by the "climate", was it tongue in cheek or what? I think it should be simplified without some of the details on that. I'll have another look in google books now to see if I can find some more scraps.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:33, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
Alright if I nom for GA now? To get to FA it will really need a lot of time researching all sorts of key words to try to really glean all the materials from books! I've found a fair bit anyway to be getting on with. It's definitely OK for GA now I think.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:16, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
Nommed. A better photo of the black sheep Elliott Roosevelt would fit nicely in a double image with Bogart I think. Can you find a better one or crop it or something?♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:48, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
Perhaps try the military history project and Kirill Lokshin, H.j Mitchell etc?♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:06, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
I'll be working on The Ritz London next I think. I was wondering if you'd be interested on working on something like The Beverly Hills Hotel? I bet that has some really interesting history and anecdotes!♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:49, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

A question about images in old publications
[edit]Do you know whether images in old issues of Radio Mirror (and the same magazine under varying titles) can be used on Wikipedia? As I have been browsing online issues from 1940, I thought that many of the photos would be good for use with Wikipedia articles. I don't know enough about copyright status, so I thought I would seek your opinion. If they can be used, I'll be glad to make some screen captures and find out how and where to upload them. Eddie Blick (talk) 16:32, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for sending that information. I checked the sources in upenn for 1967 and 1968 (since the magazines I'm looking at now are from 1940). I couldn't find any renewal for Radio Mirror or Radio and Television Mirror in either year, so I guess it would be safe to use images from those issues. Stork Club Cub Room November 1944.jpg
[edit]I'm still pinching myself, but I discovered here that the 1944 issues of Life magazine are public domain, as are the first 13 issues of 1945. I did a copyright search and it appears to be true. I made a list of the issues and was reviewing them when I saw the Stork Club feature in the issue dated November 6, 1944. I tagged the image as a candidate to be moved to Commons, or it could be re-tagged as public domain here; or you could just tell me I'm nuts because I can hardly believe this is true. — WFinch (talk) 02:02, 19 May 2015 (UTC)

- This is right up there with dear old Star Trek. Desilu didn't copyright their first year of its production and when Paramount bought them out, they didn't get around to it until 1974-after the show was in syndication. If you find a photo and can positively connect it to Desilu, Paramount or NBC and can verify the dating on it, it's free. I spent quite a few hours with the UPenn books a while back and found that out. Stumbled on Paramount's 1974 original registrations for it on the way to something else. GA projects
[edit]OK, let's get back to promoting a few. Any idea where La Caravelle (New York) was? We should state location in lede and coordinates if possible. I'll expand the lede and it should be OK for GA. John Warne Gates I'll just give a read through now and nom. Can you see if you can find more on him in the Waldorf book, I could have sworn there was a chapter on him about a third the way through. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:21, 22 June 2015 (UTC)
Mmm John Warne Gates needs more work than I'd thought. It's too long, it really needs a significant trim as I really find it quite difficult to read. Most of the Panic of 1907 stuff isn't relevant to Gates's biography. Can you try to cut it to stick to the main points more?♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:32, 22 June 2015 (UTC)

Congrats on Gates! You know I have a feeling there might be an FA in it at some point. Re: Johnny Mercer
[edit]I'm glad we got to the bottom of that one. Copying is always a pain when it happens. I had a biography copied almost word for word by the BBC of all places a few months back. You wouldn't think they'd do something like that, but I suppose anything's possible. I still have the bio I bought last year to read (it's on my to do list), so with luck there'll be some interesting stuff in there we can use.
I think putting the Joan Robinson Hill stuff forward for PR again is definitely worth a shot. IMHO, the split was messed up a bit as some of the information ended up in the wrong place, like the stuff about her illness which is relevant to her death. I suppose if it was merged again we could just revert back to an earlier version then redo some of the copyediting that happened afterwards. I think you can only list one article at a time on PR, but I'll have to check. If it is the case though perhaps it might be worth listing Death of Joan Robinson Hill then mentioning the previous review and asking for some feedback. This is Paul (talk) 21:19, 8 July 2015 (UTC)
How about these lobby posters for template
[edit]I went through some films that had existing lobby art, a tad more colorful than splotchy newspaper adds. Nothing against adds but I thought the original audiences would have been drawn into the theatres by colorful advertisings. Many pre-1923. The list is as follows:
- The Fighting Trail (1917)..poster Done
- Playing with Fire(1921 Universal)..poster Done
- Under Suspicion (1930)...lobby poster Done
- A Girl Named Mary (1919)...lobby poster Done

- Flying Pat (1920)...lobby poster Done
- Where Was I? (film) (1925)...lobby poster Done

[edit]I appreciate your help in working to improve the information on my uploads to Wikimedia Commons today. You and the other Wikipedians have been patient in telling me about the mistakes I made, and I've tried to fix the licenses, source information etc. Now I know much better about the process. I guess the upload wizard was too easy in walking me through the process without my stopping to think about the options. Most of the uploads I've done previously have been my own photos but not of publications. Uncommon fritillary (talk) 01:14, 7 August 2015 (UTC)

- I meant to thank both you, We hope, and Ssilvers too, because you both have taken pains to walk me through the proper way of crediting images from publications. And thanks too for the information about the standard caution about what could be taken for a Nazi symbol if it had been published in a later era. I certainly understand why the label is considered worthwhile. Your friendly help certainly encourages me to continue adding to Wikimedia Commons (but now I know more about what to look out for!). Silent picture lobby art September 2015
[edit]These lobby posters I think are a tad better representative of their articles, a good deal of them lost films. I would like to see more of the silent articles with colorful lobby cards or if possible posters. The original silent patrons were drawn in by the flashy posters that promised. Newspaper adverts (even the smeared smudgy ones) are fine when on viable art can be had.
The first two are short films "Play Safe" (1927) and "A Canine Sherlock Holmes" (1912), I usually try to stay away from shorts but these two wer irresistibly cute. The two Lila Lee films had great newspaper adds with not too much smear so I included them.

Pigpen
[edit]I don't suppose you could you quickly take a look at File:Ron "Pigpen" McKernan.jpg? It was (until yesterday) the infobox image on Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, currently up for a GA review. Viriditas has raised concerns about the fair use rationale; specifically the original source (since resolved), it's too big and its quality is too high. I've commented it out for the minute, but I'd rather see if we could fix it up to comply with all the NFCC criteria. I can easily load the existing image into GIMP and shrink it. What do you think? [edit]Can you find anything on Steiger being blacklisted? I'd guess late 50s and early 1960s. in the personal life section "Steiger was outspoken on McCarthyism, which led to his being blacklisted for a period.".. Needs expansion/footnote.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:19, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

Because you have absolutely nothing else on your agenda (o.0) is it possible to determine where this picture was made and if it is usable as PD under US government work? Help with image copyrights?
[edit]Hi, I'm working on Marilyn Monroe's article with the aim of getting it to GA level. I'm pretty much done with the written part and am currently trying to find better images, but feel a bit unsure when it comes to copyright issues. Dr. Blofeld mentioned that you could maybe help me with this. No worries if you can't :) TrueHeartSusie3 (talk) 17:06, 12 September 2015 (UTC)TrueHeartSusie3
- Thank you so much (hope it's ok to reply here?)! I've found some images which seem to be publicity stills, but I am not sure since I've never uploaded anything in Commons before:
- Ladies of the Chorus:
- http://in1.ccio.co/k2/3G/f8/26e270cb69178865823ab2eadc7275a7.jpg This has a copyright notice "C" in circle-at bottom right. There's no mention of the studio or any proof of dating here.
- http://theredlist.com/media/database/muses/icon/the_one/marilyn-monroe-2/036-marilyn-monroe-theredlist.jpeg This also has a "C" in circle notice at lower right and no mention of the studio or proof of dating.
- http://www.orizzontidigloria.com/uploads/7/8/6/3/7863172/8451525_orig.jpg This is a copy of the one above and has the same issues-"C" in circle notice at lower right, no mention of the studio or proof of dating.
- The Asphalt Jungle:
- http://theredlist.com/media/database/muses/tribes/huston-tribe/034-huston-tribe-theredlist.jpg No idea which studio this is from and no proof of dating.
- Don't Bother to Knock:
- http://ilarge.lisimg.com/image/6102745/968full-don't-bother-to-knock-poster.jpg This would be OK if a back could be found to show there was no copyright notice on the back and to have some proof of dating on it.
- Some Like It Hot:
- http://athenacinema.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/1000043851.jpg There's no mention of the film studio or dating. Also-when photos are cropped, any copyright notices which were printed on the border could have been lost. It's very difficult to say this either is not copyrighted or the copyright wasn't renewed unless you can see an uncropped photo with identification as to who took the image, a copy of the photo back because some studios--RKO was one to stamp their copyright notices on the back of their photos-and some proof of dating.
- Do you think any of these could be used? I've searched for all of these film titles on the US Copyright Office website, and it doesn't seem that publicity photos for any of these films have been copyrighted. TrueHeartSusie3 (talk) 18:10, 12 September 2015 (UTC)TrueHeartSusie3
- Let me start looking at these and I'll make notes here. We hope (talk) 18:15, 12 September 2015 (UTC)
- By uncropped photos, do you mean this:
- TrueHeartSusie3 (talk) 19:01, 12 September 2015 (UTC)TrueHeartSusie3
- Yes-as you see the information about the film-studio and copyright notices, if any--are able to be seen. We hope (talk) 19:05, 12 September 2015 (UTC)
- Given that they were copyrighted but magazines and newspapers were free to use them, would images such as those two be ok to use on Wikipedia? Just noticed your message on my page – so you mean images like those are ok, but I would need to find them printed in magazines/newspapers rather than use the originals? TrueHeartSusie3 (talk) 19:08, 12 September 2015 (UTC)TrueHeartSusie3
- Yes-as you see the information about the film-studio and copyright notices, if any--are able to be seen. We hope (talk) 19:05, 12 September 2015 (UTC)
- Let me start looking at these and I'll make notes here. We hope (talk) 18:15, 12 September 2015 (UTC)
Yes, basically. Take a look at the lower right of this photo zoomed. "Permission granted for newspaper and magazine reproduction." There are other wordings for the rider but they all cover the same thing-newspapers and magazines had permission "up front" to print the photos without copyright problems. Some of the riders have wording that specifically excludes television as the studios feared it at one time. The newspapers and magazines have to be in the public domain--copyright not renewed is the most common reason why. I'll run the magazine with the Misfits photo in it to make sure it's copyright not renewed. We hope (talk) 19:29, 12 September 2015 (UTC)
