Wikipedia:Good article reassessment/Haymarket affair/1

I have asked at Wikipedia:Good article reassessment/Haymarket affair/1 for review of the good article status you gave to Haymarket affair at Talk:Haymarket_affair/Archive_3#Good_article_nomination_on_hold. I'm sure you are aware of the controversy surrounding this article. I will review the discussion at Talk:Haymarket_affair/Archive_3#Good_article_nomination_on_hold and notify the numerous wikiprojects listed on the talk page. I just wanted to let you know that I have had to delete the above image that you uploaded. It was brought to my attention that the image comes from another website. Although we don't consider an additional copyright on images that are faithful reproductions (i.e. Amazon thumbnails) of the cover, this was a posed photograph of the entire book. For this reason it fails the reproducibility requirement of WP:FUR (i.e. someone could make a free version of the image if they had access to the book). My apologies if this is in fact an image you created yourself. --Errant (chat!) 11:56, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

The Tea Leaf - Issue One - Recent news from the Teahouse

Hi! Welcome to the first edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

Spring has sprung! Stop by the Teahouse for a cup of tea under the cherry blossoms.
  • Metrics are out from week one. Week one showed that the need for Teahouse hosts to invite new editors to the Teahouse is urgent for this pilot period. It also showed that emailing new users invitations is a powerful tool, with new editors responding more to emails than to talk page templates. We also learned that the customized database reports created for the Teahouse have the highest return rate of participation by invitees. Check out the metrics here and see how you can help with inviting in our Invitation Guide.
  • A refreshed "Your hosts" page encourages experienced Wikipedians to learn about the Teahouse and participate. With community input, the Teahouse has updated the Your hosts page which details the host roles within the Teahouse pilot and the importance that hosts play in providing a friendly, special experience not always found on other welcome/help spaces on Wikipedia. It also explains how Teahouse hosts are important regarding metrics reporting during this pilot. Are you an experienced editor who wants to help out? Take a look at the new page today and start learning about the hosts tasks and how you can participate!
  • Introduce yourself and meet new guests at the Teahouse. Take the time to welcome and get to know the latest guests at the Teahouse. New & experienced editors to Wikipedia can add a brief infobox about themselves and get to know one another with direct links to userpages. Drop off some wikilove to these editors today, they'll surely be happy to feel the wikilove!

Hi. When you recently edited Sparrow (email client), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page App Store (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

HighBeam

Hello Steven, I am sending this message to editors who signed up for the Women's History Month Edit-a-thon. Please help spread the word. HighBeam Research--an online, pay-for-use search engine for newspapers, magazines, academic journals, newswires, trade magazines and encyclopedias has agreed to give free, full-access, 1-year accounts for up to 1000 Wikipedia editors to use. HighBeam has access to over 80 million articles from 6,500 publications, most of which are not available for free elsewhere on the internet. Aside from a free 7-day trial (credit card required), access to HighBeam would cost $30 per month or $200 per year for the first year and $300 for subsequent years, so this is a wonderful, free, no-strings-attached opportunity. To qualify, editors must have at least a 1 year-old account with 1000 edits. Please add your name to the WP:HighBeam/Applications account sign-up page if you are interested. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 18:43, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Oy, you.

Thank you for the welcome. Isarra (talk) 20:50, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi Steven hope your well. I currently have the above up for GAC having worked on it for the last few months. Leno has recieved a extensive PR and my intensions are to take it to FAC. I see from the reviewers list that theatre and performing are listed as two of your interests so feel this will be right up your street! Could you oblige with a quick review? -- Cassianto (talk) 21:32, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

Obrigada

Thank you for the barnstar :)

Just want you to know that you played an instrumental role in my becoming a Wikipedian, and I'm eternally grateful for it. Even if we sometimes disagree on the inclusionist/deletionist split :) I'll always look up to your amazing contributions to the sum of all human knowledge. You rock. Hello Steven! Thank you for letting me know about my mistakes. I am new to Wikipedia and was not aware of that. I will continue trying to make improvements though! danni1125 (talk) 18:07, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

Bedonk a donks...

Hi Steven. On the donkey article, you might want to look at the diffs of Dana boomer's last edit prior to the extensive work JLAN did to create the present version. Dana was working on this article quite a bit until JLAN stepped in (and well, me too, as I have concerns about JLAN). At that point, Dana stepped out. You might want to look at the work she did and see what can be restored and salvaged. Because I filed an ANI on JLAN due to his involvement on Donkey, Burro and Large Black (pig), I hesitate to do much content work on the donkey article myself. But if others see useful edits, well, just to draw your attention to Dana's work. Montanabw(talk) 18:41, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

I don't precisely understand what this editor is up to, or what the problem is. I see some edits that look vaguely okay, but then I also see you had to revert them ([1]) because they removed citations and cited content with no backing sources. Is it just that this user is wikistalking Dana still? (I have caught up on the last ANI thread BTW, and I think Worm's recommendations to all still should be given close attention by all...) Steven Walling • talk 22:28, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, same guy. Long, long history with that editor at WPEQ, not only with me & Dana, though I tend to take point when we get these sorts showing up, (why he is so mean to Dana is a mystery to me other than I suspect he has issues with women in general, but I cannot suss out motives). No recent problems on this article since said editor's last spat with SMC, but I'm not the best one to be going into this particular article due to the ANI and past history, and if I make massive changes, it will just be fat on the fire with this user, whose issues with me are obvious (see ridiculous discussion over feeding straw). But the article does need improvement, and while the other editor did add some useful material (some of the reorganization probably works as well as what was before, and his pointing out errors in using "filly/colt" lingo was probably correct, even if his tone was so aggravating that I got pissed just on principle) but also messed up a bunch of things (material in nutrition section was problematic, stuff on US history evidences not having a clear understanding of US history) But all that aside, point is, Dana did a BUNCH of sandboxing on it prior to moving her edits over, she clearly was starting to move it toward GA, but when said other editor began working on the same article, he changed a bunch of things, much with dubious sourcing to a book no one else has access to, and threw a huge chunk of Dana's carefully researched history section, and she has stepped back from the conflict. (diff to Dana's last "clean" version here) So, if you think some or much of her work from December should be restored, I'm for it. I'm also willing to keep eyes on the article, offer opinions, suggestions and small edits to all. But I'm not the one to lead this improvement effort. And I won't kick if you merge the jenny article, either. Montanabw(talk) 17:52, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

Not sure if adding sections to "talk" page is best way to reply to you, or if wikipedia has any sort of IM system? x3

In any event, yeah I just noticed the Project Glass -> Siri link due to browsing the topic. But on the topic of fixing disambiguation links broadly, is this something anyone has built automated support for?

For example, a bot which scans looking for links to disambiguation pages, displays them for editors to decide which second-level link is appropriate, and then fixes the link in-situ? Or is the modus operandi to visit pages and plow through edits by hand? A quick scan over the project page didn't clarify that bit for me.

Put simply, if you've got a "which of these links is the right one?" flashcard webapp, I could put some time into using it. If you don't, but there are good 'bot building blocks out there, I could guage how hard such a beast would be to make. What's the state of this presently?

Danke Steven, haff gud tay. :3 JesseT77 (talk) 00:49, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

The Tea Leaf - Issue Two

Hi! Welcome to the second edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

  • Teahouse celebrates one month of being open! This first month has drawn a lot of community interest to the Teahouse. Hosts & community members have been working with the project team to improve the project in many ways including creating scripts to make inviting easier, exploring mediation processes for troubling guests, and best practices regarding mentoring for new editors who visit the Teahouse.
Springtime means fresh tea leaves...
  • First month metrics report an average of 30 new editors visiting the Teahouse each week. Approximately 30 new editors participate in the Teahouse each week, by way of asking questions and making guest profiles. An average of six new questions and four new profiles are made each day. We'd love to hear your ideas about how we can spread the word about the Teahouse to more new editors.
  • Teahouse has many regulars. Like any great teahouse, our Teahouse has a 61% return rate of guests, who come back to ask additional questions and to also help answer others' questions. Return guests cite the speedy response rate of hosts and the friendly, easy to understand responses by the hosts and other participants as the main reasons for coming back for another cup o' tea!
  • Early metrics on retention. It's still too early to draw conclusions about the Teahouse's impact on new editor retention, but, early data shows that 38% of new editors who participate at the Teahouse are still actively editing Wikipedia 2-4 weeks later, this is compared with 7% from a control group of uninvited new editors who showed similar first day editing activity. Additional metrics can be found on the Teahouse metrics page.
  • Nine new hosts welcomed to the Teahouse. Nine new hosts have been welcomed to the Teahouse during month one: Chicocvenancio, Cullen328, Hallows AG, Jeffwang, Mono, Tony1, Worm That Turned, Writ Keeper, and Nathan2055. Welcome to the Teahouse gang, folks!
  • Say hello to the new guests at the Teahouse. Take the time to welcome and get to know the latest guests at the Teahouse. Drop off some wikilove to these editors today, as being welcomed by experienced editors is a really nice way to make new editors feel welcome.

A kitten for you!

Hi, Steven. I am new to Wikipedia, so I don't know whether this is the right way to answer to your message. Anyway, enjoy the nice cat.

Regarding my Skype's edit, their "blog" seems to be the single offcial site where they "explain" the new features of new versions. And in the forum url, it's some staff which explains that automatic updates cannot be disabled. Who else could better know about an automatic defect (even if they want to include it amongst the list of "features") of a program than the manufacturer ifself?

Anyway, thank you very much for you attention and recommendation, which I will try to remember in the future.

Best regards,

Boran cattle

Hi, thanks for your help. I didn't want to make any edits that were too big since the two sources I snagged seemed to offer different ideas of their history. I think I just need to find some more sources and figure out what happened one. One source mentions Europeans, while another just Ethiopians. If you have any other material I could use to source, that'd be great. Yaminator talk 01:00, 23 April 2012 (UTC)

Okay, I'll try to find more sources to help us reconcile the ones already there. Thanks for getting back to me. :) Steven Walling • talk 19:09, 23 April 2012 (UTC)
Super! I did a few searches in Google Scholar and a lot of the papers I retrieved were mostly grounded in the natural sciences, especially medicine, mentioning a certain type of disease. I'm not very familiar with cattle diseases at all, so I fear it went right over my head. (If you know anything about them, it'd likely be a very useful thing to add seeing as how often it's cited. Titles include things like "Susceptibility of N'Dama and Boran cattle to tsetse-transmitted primary and rechallenge infections with a homologous serodeme of Trypanosoma congolense"). I'll try looking into some Social Sciences databases and see if I can find anything of use. And if it helps, the two books I cited were on google books. So everything on the page is accessible online, which should help in cross-checking. Thanks again for your help! :) Yaminator talk 21:34, 23 April 2012 (UTC)

Watchlist style changes

Um, you just changed it back to bold for everyone. Was this intentional? --Yair rand (talk) 22:17, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

No, I didn't see that he included the bolding in the rev that I reverted to. I will fix it to the previous version now that I posted on the VPT. Steven Walling • talk 22:21, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
That bit of styling you just removed had nothing to do with the watchlist bolding... --Yair rand (talk) 22:24, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
The bolding was not done by a CSS change, it was done by a change to the MW configuration. Part of the styling added by Edokter removed the bolding. --Yair rand (talk) 22:26, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
Well shit. That's what I get for trying to boldly revert a bold change that was too bold. I am happy to self-revert any portion if it's mucking with other things. Steven Walling • talk 22:28, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
  • That went well :) User Acceptance Testing - the key to a successful implementation. I do this stuff for a living and, OK, I don't have global users, but it really is unacceptable to be testing in a live environment. You need a test environment and a pool of testers (who are not the developers) who will quickly filter out the 'this gives me a migraine' changes. And you need better comms. Get someone to code a bot to put notices around. Use the Signpost. Use any comms tools you can. Everyone always complains when things change, and I know half the users (probably more like 90% here) would never notice any discussion, but even most of the people who hang around the technical areas didn't know this was coming. I know I'm probably preaching to the choir here, and you're already quietly throttling the developers, but y'know :) --Elen of the Roads (talk) 22:43, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
    • To be clear: to my knowledge the configuration change was not a WMF initiative, and my revert was definitely not a work-related thing. And yes, I agree about testing environments and communications, though I think Erwin was acting totally in good faith and not trying to slip anything under the radar. I think it's good for community members to be bold (even more so than staff in their work environment), but applying BRD here would mean the change needs to be reverted for now. Steven Walling • talk 22:48, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
Bold editing of an article is fine. Bold messing with the interface without warning is terribly disruptive to a lot of people. WP:BRD is just an essay, and I cannot think that it was ever imagined anyone would try applying it to the user interface. Look at the various policies that have arisen on automated, semi-automated and general 100mph editing - the consensus is shifting to a view that there has to be a consensus before the run of editing - either a specific bot approval, a request for the action, or a general consensus like the AWB general fixes. I think there is actually a danger in allowing even Erwin (who does really good shit man) to make sudden and unexpected changes, that the community will become even more suspicious of "developers" (and I don't think they distinguish between paid staff and volunteers here). That's my two penn'orth anyway. It's a bit of a storm in a latte in this case, but it's worth bearing in mind. Elen of the Roads (talk) 22:58, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

Scottdelaney1067

Hey VanTucky, It's been almost 5 years since you first welcomed me to Wikipedia! I don't think we've directly interacted since then, but I did realize some years ago that you're now Steven Walling (well, I guess you always were, but you know what I mean) and are working for the Foundation. So, belated congratulations to you. Thanks for the advice you gave Scott at User talk:Scottdelaney1067#In response to your feedback. Dennis Brown and I have been trying to rein him in a bit, but I don't know how effective we've been. Hopefully input from other editors will help him get the message. He has enthusiasm and the potential to be a valuable editor, but still seems a little too gung-ho – Dennis and I have expressed the concern that he'll run up against someone who'll bite back at him hard. I responded to your message to him on his talk page with a suggestion of possibly getting a mentor at WP:CVUA. Perhaps you could help keep an eye on him. Thanks. Mojoworker (talk) 16:41, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the congrats, and glad you remember the welcome. :) I will be sure to check in with Scott. Steven Walling • talk 04:35, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

Just a heads up you might get some flak for your semi-prot as there's been edit warring on the part of established editors too. --NeilN talk to me 06:58, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

If folks want to contest it that's okay with me. Checking the history, all I can see is an IP edit warring to remove cited content. People can quibble about whether that's vandalism or a legit content dispute that should be resolve through DR bureaucracy, but I'm not personally interested in the subject, just trying to resolve the WP:RFP request. ;-) Steven Walling • talk 07:02, 11 June 2012 (UTC)
Steven, can you please restore my last edit to the article and then re-lock it? The subject of the article has been subject to an extremely vicious smear campaign by and in the Australian media; my last edit sheds some light on that fact. User Skyring alias Pete has repeatedly baited other editors, inserted edits with a biased POV, removed any edits or sources which suggest that the article's subject should be presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court, and has been maliciously editing the article. (And yes; I am sure the same will be said of me by him, but that's how it goes). 121.216.230.139 (talk) 07:12, 11 June 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for your comment, and for participating. However, from what I can see, the edit involved a primary source which is contested on the article's talk page. It's not my place to decide that dispute. Steven Walling • talk 07:17, 11 June 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for the reply. Given the above, can the article please be listed for speedy deletion as an attack page? 121.216.230.139 (talk) 07:42, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

  • Two weeks after participating, 33% of Teahouse guests are still active on Wikipedia, as opposed to 11% of a similar control group.
  • New editors who participated in the Teahouse edit 10x the number of articles, make 7x more global edits, and 2x as much of their content survives on Wikipedia compared to the control group.
  • Women participate in the Teahouse 28% of Teahouse participants were women, up from 9% of editors on Wikipedia in general, good news for this project which aimed to have impact on the gender gap too - but still lots to be done here!
  • New opportunities await for the Teahouse in phase two as the Teahouse team and Wikipedia community examine ways to improve, scale, and sustain the project. Opportunities for future work include:
  • Automating or semi-automating systems such as invites, metrics and archiving
  • Experimenting with more ways for new editors to discover the Teahouse
  • Building out the social and peer-to-peer aspects further, including exploring ways to make answering questions easier, creating more ways for new editors to help each other and for all participants to acknowledge each other's efforts
  • Growing volunteer capacity, continuing to transfer Teahouse administration tasks to volunteers whenever possible, and looking for new ways to make maintenance and participation easier for everyone.
  • Want to know how you can lend a hand at the Teahouse? Become a host! Learn more about what makes the Teahouse different than other help spaces on Wikipedia and see how you can help new editors by visiting here.
  • Say hello to the new guests at the Teahouse. Take the time to welcome and get to know the latest guests at the Teahouse. Drop off some wikilove to these editors today, as being welcomed by experienced editors is really encouraging to new Wikipedians.

Wikipedia Help Survey

Hi there, my name's Peter Coombe and I'm a Wikimedia Community Fellow working on a project to improve Wikipedia's help system. At the moment I'm trying to learn more about how people use and find the current help pages. If you could help by filling out this brief survey about your experiences, I'd be very grateful. It should take less than 10 minutes, and your responses will not be tied to your username in any way.

Thank you for your time,

SF Article Review Party! Fun times (and food) for all.

Hi, Steven! Just wanted to let you know the Education Program team is hosting an Article Review Party at the SF Wikimedia Foundation office on Sunday, June 24th (from 11ish–3ish). We'll provide food, drinks, music, and laughter. You just provide your brilliant mind and acute eye for reviewing articles. If you can spare an hour or two, please sign up and join us on this mirthful occasion. Hope to see you there! JMathewson (WMF) (talk) 18:26, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

Electronic cigs...

Given the sprot (which I agree with completely) I thought I would just mention that I have started reviewing the Commons images for this category. I'm finding a number of single account offerings which look a little suspicious to me - if there is anything cross wiki I'll let folk know. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 08:39, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, it's likely it's like the pr0n situation: folks quickly realize that if they license correctly they can give us a glut of photos of a product. Steven Walling • talk 23:51, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

Non-free rationale for File:Vvoice august cover.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Vvoice august cover.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 13:16, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Steven, I just wanted to make sure that you saw this. You can reply to the list or ping me on my talk page. If you would prefer to use private email that's ok too. I feel that we support similar goals here, and I am sure other editors do as well. The questions are about implementation, and I am cautiously optimistic that we in the community can arrive at a consensus on one form or another of implementation. Pine 09:05, 10 July 2012 (UTC)

WikiProject Editor Retention: You are the "Research and data analysis" team lead

Hi Steven, I went ahead and created project teams for each of the general editor retention areas people have expressed an interest to work in. Please review the team lists here: Wikipedia:WikiProject_Editor_Retention#Project_teams. I have assigned you as the leader of the "Research and data analysis" team. Assuming you are interested in taking on this role, please notify the members of your team, and verify each editor is interested in being on the team. I expect that there might be some shuffling around of roles and teams at first, but once the teams are settled, I will co-ordinate with the teams leads to put together goals and a basic project plan to make sure that the project as a whole is successful and makes a measurable, positive difference for Wikipedia. Thank you for for your involvement... Zad68 19:42, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Dear Author/Steven Walling My name is Nuša Farič and I am a Health Psychology MSc student at University College London (UCL). I am currently running a quantitative study entitled Who edits health-related Wikipedia pages and why? I am interested in the editorial experience of people who edit health-related Wikipedia pages. I am interested to learn more about the authors of health-related pages on Wikipedia and what motivations they have for doing so. I am currently contacting the authors of randomly selected articles and I noticed that someone at this address recently edited an article on Artificial Insemination. I would like to ask you a few questions about you and your experience of editing the above mentioned article and or other health-related articles. If you would like more information about the project, please visit my user page (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Hydra_Rain) and if interested, please reply via my talk page or e-mail me on nusa.faric.11@ucl.ac.uk. Nomination of EthicalWiki for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article EthicalWiki is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/EthicalWiki until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. SmartSE (talk) 18:42, 22 July 2012 (UTC)

The Tea Leaf - Issue Five

Stop by for a tasty glass of wiki-iced tea at the Teahouse, today!

Hi! Welcome to the fifth edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

  • Guest activity increased in July. Questions are up from an average of 36 per week in June to 43 per week in July, and guest profile creation has also increased. This is likely a result of the automatic invite experiments we started near the end of month, which seeks to lessen the burden on hosts and other volunteers who manually invite editors. During the last week of July, questions doubled in the Teahouse! (But don't let that deter you from inviting editors to the Teahouse, please, there are still lots of new editors who haven't found Teahouse yet.)
  • More Teahouse hosts than ever. We had 12 new hosts sign up to participate at the Teahouse! We now have 35 hosts volunteering at the Teahouse. Feel free to stop by and see them all here.
  • Phase two update: Host sprint. In August, the Teahouse team plans to improve the host experience by developing a simpler new-host creation process, a better way of surfacing active hosts, and a host lounge renovation. Take a look at the plan and weigh in here.
  • New Teahouse guest barnstar is awarded to first recipient: Charlie Inks. Using the Teahouse barnstar designed by Heatherawalls, hosts hajatvrc and Ryan Vesey created the new Teahouse Guest Barnstar. The first recipient is Charlie Inks, for her boldness in asking questions at the Teahouse. Check out the award in action here.
  • Teahouse was a hot topic at Wikimania! The Teahouse was a hot topic at Wikimania this past month, where editor retention and interface design was heavily discussed. Sarah and Jonathan presented the Teahouse during the Wikimedia Fellowships panel. Slides can be viewed here. A lunch was also held at Wikimania for Teahouse hosts.

As always, thanks for supporting the Teahouse project! Stop by and visit us today!

Toxic gumbo

Hi, Steven! I noticed you waded into the toxic gumbo mess today. I know how much you know about its prior history, but the edit is controversial, and has been reverted by several editors, only to be added back by a decidedly uncivil IP. There's no place for it in the article about this dish; all it discusses is a folk use of the word, and might have a place in the hurricane's article at best. Unfortunately, none of the involved editors started a discussion of the edit, so I've done that now in the hope we can arrive at a civil consensus. DoRD has already semi'd the article once to stop the IP, but we can but hope discussion will help. --Drmargi (talk) 03:27, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

The Tea Leaf - Issue Six

Hi! Welcome to the sixth edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

  • Teahouse serves over 700 new editors in six months on Wikipedia! Since February 27, 741 new editors have participated at the Teahouse. The Q&A board and the guest intro pages are more active than ever.
A lovely little teahouse nestled in Germany from Wiki Loves Monuments
  • Automatic invites are doing the trick: 50% more new editors visiting each week. Ever since HostBot's automated invite trial phase began we've seen a boost in new editor participation. Automating a baseline set of invitations also allows Teahouse hosts to focus on serving hot cups of help to guests, instead of spending countless hours inviting.
  • Guests to the Teahouse continue to edit more & interact more with other community members than non-Teahouse guests according to six month metrics. Teahouse guests make more than twice the article edits and edit more talk pages than other new editors.
  • New host process implemented which encourages anyone to get started as a Teahouse host in a few easy steps. Stop by the hosts page and become a Teahouse host today!
  • Host lounge renovations nearing completion. Working closely with Teahouse hosts, we've made some major renovations to the Teahouse Host Lounge - the main hangout and resource space for hosts. Learn more about the improvements here.

As always, thanks for supporting the Teahouse project! Stop by and visit us today!

Poultry template revision

I've had a stab at revising

as you suggested. Because of the large differences beween the species used, I thought this was best organised on a 'bird' basis. I have included all the birds in the Poultry article, although some might dispute whether all birds on here should be classified as 'Poultry'. I've tried to arrange the lists in the following order - Species (most common if known), List of breed or species, Family taxon, Uses or products, Housing system, Welfare, Other.

Let me know what you think. DrChrissy (talk) 16:30, 16 September 2012 (UTC)

WikiProject Good articles (Participant Clean-Up)

Hello, you are receiving this message because you are currently a participant of WikiProject Good articles. Since the creation of the WikiProject, over 200 user's have joined to help review good article nominations and contribute to other sections of the WikiProject. Over the years, several of these users have stopped reviewing articles and/or have become inactive with the project but are still listed as participates. In order to improve communications with other participants and get newsletters sent out faster (newsletters will begin to be sent out monthly starting in October) all participants that are no longer active with the WikiProject will be removed from the participants list.

If you are still interested in being a participant for this WikiProject, please sign your user name here and please help review some articles so we can reduce the size of the backlog. If you are no longer interested, you do not need to sign your name anywhere and your name will be removed from the participants list after the deadline. Remember that even if you are not interested at this time, you can always re-add your name to the list whenever you want. The deadline to sign your name on the page above will be November 1, 2012. Thank-you. 13:34, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Ramtha's School of Enlightenment, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Spiritual (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Favour viewing template please

Hi Steven. A while ago you suggested we expand the Poultry template. I worked very hard on this and then submitted it for comments. There was only one from an editor, Stemonitis. Prior to this, Stemonitis and I had got close to an edit war over some taxonomic details on Pain in invertebrates (taxonomy is not my specialist subject, but I wanted the article to be clear to the non-taxonomist reader). Anyway, Stemonitis suddenly began editing various articles I started and then made comments on the template, making me feel this had become a vendetta. I made changes to the Poultry template according to comments by Stemonitis and another editor I asked to have a look for an independent opinion. But, this is still apparently not enough and ‎Stemonitis has reverted to the old template which is misleading and inaccurate. Please could you look at the new Poultry template I developed and let me know what you think. All the best. __DrChrissy (talk) 17:01, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

Hey. I sympathize with you about having someone seemingly follow you around. But I'm not sure how the shorter version is inaccurate or misleading. Just incomplete perhaps. Steven Walling • talk 22:09, 13 October 2012 (UTC)

Uw-softestblock

Hiya Steven. About 4 years ago, I created and popularized Template:Uw-softerblock. Unfortunately, the message became longer, more complicated and scarier over time, so I've just created Template:Uw-softestblock. You can see the results at User talk:Ferdiesfoodlab, for instance. I know from Wikimania and elsewhere that you guys have done a lot of work on evaluating warning messages; do you have any suggestions on this one? - Dank (push to talk) 21:18, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

Skeuomorph examples

Hi, thanks for your contributions to skeuomorph. I wrote dubious (which you undid) on the image of the car with fake wood siding because it needs a citation. Please see Talk:Skeuomorph#Examples_and_images:_with_citations_only_please. Everybody (including me -- the fake floorboards are my original photograph) have great ideas for illustrating skeumorphs. That's the problem. The article is a victim of its own sucess. As User:K8_fan wrote on Talk:Skeuomorph "I've been monitoring this article for quite some time ... it's such a cool term that loads of new users visit here and add one - and the list gets longer and eventually gets pruned. Rinse, repeat." Really everything needs citations on this page, otherwise it gets sever unreferenced content creep.

Responded there. Thanks for the note! Steven Walling • talk 23:02, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

Edit-a-thon tomorrow (Saturday) in Oakland

Hi, I hope you will be joining us tomorrow afternoon at the Edit-a-thon at Tech Liminal, in Oakland. We'll be working on articles relating to women and democracy (and anything else that interests you). It's sponsored by the California League of Women Voters, Tech Liminal, and me.

If this is the first you are hearing of this event, my apologies for the last-minute notice! I announced it on the San Francisco email list and by a banner on your watchlist, but I neglected to look at the San Francisco invitation list until this evening. If you can't make it this time, I hope to see you at a similar event soon! -Pete (talk) 04:54, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

Might you reconsider the RFPP? It would only be for a week or two, this is turning into an edit war between the two factions. Most contribs are not participating in the discussion on the talk page and keep re-adding the information without discussion - ignoring BRD altogether.

If you would, please revert the most recent and lock it down so they will be forced to discuss the disputed information. --Jeremy (blah blahI did it!) 07:10, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Jared Diamond's Bio

I see that you deleted someone's entry that did not have sources. Revision as of 18:38, 3 February 2013 (edit) Mohawkvellum (talk | contribs)

I tried to see if I could contact them--I suspect it is an indigenous person unfamiliar with how to do the sourcing required.

There is a series of a dozen essays from professional scholars and indigenous people that iMediaEthics, an award winning news site that is published by our foundation Art Science Research Laboratory, co-founded with my late husband Stephen Jay Gould that should be suitable and support Mohawkvellum's statement . Since I already am engaged with James Cantor to restore a section on this Jared Diamond bio page that was stable for many years, I fear, if I add anything from this series, of being accused of conflict of interest even though Mondo Times and Google Publisher etc recognize iMediaEthics as a legitimate media business news site.

Can you advise? Here is an example http://www.imediaethics.org/News/170/Rebutting_jared_diamonds_savage_portrait__.php and here http://www.imediaethics.org/News/152/The_new_yorker_rsquos_second_crisis_of_conscience__.php . This blog, Savage Minds, is consider authoritative in Pacific anthropology and endorses the Sillitoe, Kuwimb essay as most authoritative on the subject of Diamond's claims about tribal warfare in the New yorker article that led to Diamond being sued.

As I posted on the Talk page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Jared_Diamond , the timing of this deletion of an entire section, in perception or reality, is suspect as it occurred on the very day Diamond's book pub date. Also with precision, on the same book launch day, the the word "forthcoming" was removed from the front of Diamond's new book title as if intimately part of the launch.

A Tiggarjay commented from a notice board that he would help "sort things out" but I am left with dealing with Cantor on my own with no feedback? I am inexperienced with conventions or battles (I see Cantor is very familiar ). I would really appreciate some help and advice? Thank you.

Jat Airways semi-protection request

I think the only reason I was declined the request to have the article on Jat Airways semi-protected was because your were less familiar with the airline and other variables regarding it--I'm sure if you were familiar with the basics on Airbus's delivery queue, you would recognize that the IP edits are basically trying to exaggerate the airline's orders of new aircraft. If you look at the edits of IP 92.60.225.228 (see below line 152 upon clicking the link you posted) that you posted when you declined the request, it can be seen that he has not only deleted my correct references and added false ones (e.g. the Bhutan Air reference), but he/she changes the ATR-72-500 order to ATR-72-600, and likewise from Airbus A319 to Airbus A319E w/sharklets, Airbus A320 to Airbus A320neo, etc (see the fleet section if you are interested in reconsidering your decision). In the references that I put, the airline is only leasing ATR-72-500s as well as regular A319s and A320s. The A320neo and A319E with sharklets are false information because a) in none of the references does it say so, and b) the neo/sharklet versions are recently announced models and the queue for orders of the type are so occupied that even if Jat were to order them now, they would never come before 2017 at the very earliest; as you can see in the article's fleet section, the IP editors claim that such models are being delivered in 2015, and of course they put this in place of a reference I put that was once there. All I ask for, if it still seems impossible to see that the IP users are vandalizing (including deleting my references and replacing them with off-topic ones), is whether it's okay for me to send another request for the sake of not trying to get into an edit conflict with them. Zastavafan76 (talk) 17:56, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

Looking for some feedback, if you don't mind

I'm looking to get some informal feedback on an idea related to editor retention and editor recognition, before I try posting something at Village Pump Ideas.

The draft is here

I got some feedback from Dennis Brown and Drmies, which I have tried to incorporate. I'd like to get a little more before I open it up to the world.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 17:11, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

Ass's milk

Congratulations on exporting a tiny bit more American priggishness to a global audience. When you're done celebrating this little victory against potential offensiveness, feel free to do as thorough a job as I foolishly bothered to do in tidying up the loose ends effected by moving the page from where it had errantly lain, seldom remarked upon, for just shy of four years. Anyway, since my efforts are not appreciated, they will no longer be forthcoming. Congratulations once again. LaFoiblesse (talk (but don't really)) 17:41, 15 March 2013 (GMT)

You need to keep a civil tone. As you can see from the page history, when you edit something, it goes out in to people's watchlists and typically follow up edits ensue. You did perfectly fine job trying to fix the awkward naming of the article, and my follow up move was not a personal judgement. And by the way, the victory is not over imagined offensiveness, but over unnecessary grammatical complexity. Steven Walling • talk 20:34, 15 March 2013 (UTC)

Tutorials and other education

We really need a better tutorial that newbies can be asked to go through -- the kind that autogenerates a userpage for you at the end based on your completion. That would make this sort of drama harder to conjure up. [regarding: the recent U.Toronto psych class drama] – SJ +

The problem is much more complex than that, in my experience.

We actually do now have pretty comprehensive training guides (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Training) and a budding list of low-stakes things for newcomers to do right away (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:GettingStarted). Even programs like IEG experimented with this kind of thing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:India_Education_Program/Tutorial

Even if these students had gone through an onboarding process with a user page wizard and successful completion of 1-10 first decent article edits, they're going to cause a fuss if they make nearly 1,000 new pages on a certain topic in a coordinated area.

True. But that's a different sort of issue than "copyvios/plagiarism". I also think we need a better tutorial for Editors/Reviewers -- so that a % of newbies can be encouraged to 'think like a curator' and act as critic of others rather than just writer. It doesn't take a 1:1 ratio for this to be helpful - even a bad editor will start to see things differently by putting on a different hat. – SJ +

The attitude of existing editors tends to change when you move from a naturally and independently motivated group of people creating thousands of new items of their own volition, to one where people are joining because someone made a coordinated campaign. It automatically creates a situation where the recruiting entity is viewed as responsible for the quality of their work. Whether that is fair or not is debatable, but it's the reality of the situation.

The conflict is exacerbated by the nature of page creation and uploads. With edits to existing pages, where it is in fact easier to remove than to make, the cost of experimentation and even outright vandalism is lower. The burden of tagging and deleting objects like new pages and files is, both technologically and in community policy, a much heavier one.

That's an interesting point - one that has a partial tech. solution. But in this U.Toronto case they were editing existing articles. Warmly, – SJ +

Orphaned non-free media (File:Dolphin-browser-screenshot.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:Dolphin-browser-screenshot.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:09, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

Re: Withdrawl at ITN/C

Hi, just a heads up about your edit here: It's strongly preferred that instead of removing comments as you did there that you close the discussion as a withdrawl, using {{archive top}} or related templates. Thanks, SpencerT♦C 18:17, 19 April 2013 (UTC)

Ah, thanks for the tip. Will do in the future. I am obviously new to ITN, and it was pretty late here. Steven Walling • talk 18:52, 19 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited IA Writer, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Pages (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Better source request for File:Dolphin-browser-icon.png

Thanks for your upload to Wikipedia:

You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact Web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page or me at my talk page. Thank you. Message delivered by Theo's Little Bot (opt-out) 21:16, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Cow ponies and such

Just letting you know that I am proposing a merge of cow pony into stock horse. "Cow pony" is just an old slang colloquialism. Unlike polo pony, the word is not really used much by practitioners today. As far as adding it to a list or something, see what I did at List_of_horse_breeds#Types_of_horse. Warby Parker

Your clear conflicts of interest show through on the Warby Parker page. I will take it over. You should avoid editing it going forward unless edits are approved beforehand. Additionally, you should stay very very far from discussing anything relevant to price or marketing which you have clearly emphasized in your copy. Zippypie (talk) 18:59, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

@Zippypie: Uh, sorry. But you can't take over pages, and you can't just go around accusing people of bad faith or conflicts of interest. If there are things you think should be changed in the article, go ahead and change them, or bring them up on the talk page. You don't need to make threats and be a dick. Steven Walling • talk 19:03, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

Woah there cowboy, watch the language and be civil. Ad hominem attacks have no place here. I have the page in my watched list and will be monitoring it due to the obvious (and honestly admitted) conflicts of interest admitted by previous editors. I am not making any threats I am simply politely informing you of this beforehand. Additionally, it is bad form to revert verifiable edits which are properly sourced. I hope you will be more civil going forward. Zippypie (talk) 23:15, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

I'm sure Mr. Walling appreciates the lesson in civility, especially when delivered on such an olive branch. tedder (talk) 01:53, 12 May 2013 (UTC)

WP:FOOD Needs You!

Hi there Steven Walling! I've noticed you have yourself listed as a member of the Food and Drink Wikiproject. Unfortunately it looks like the project has been slowly sliding into inactivity except for a couple of people. That makes me a sad potato, and nobody likes a sad potato amirite?

If you'd like to turn my frown upside down, can you do two small things?

First off, go here and add {{Tick}} (checkY) next to your name if you're still part of the project.

Second, go to the project talkpage and participate in a discussion about how to make the project more active, and how to go about making articles in our area of interest a lot better.

You don't want to make me cry, do you? Potatoes have a lot of eyes you know. So come on, join in! :)

Changes to SuggestBot's suggestions

We have changed the number of suggested articles and which categories they are selected from. The number of stubs has been greatly reduced, the number of articles needing sources doubled, and two new categories added (orphans and unencyclopaedic articles). We have also modified the layout of the suggestions and added sortable columns with various types of information about each article. The first two columns are:

Views/Day
Daily average number of views an article's had over the past 14 days.
Quality
Predicted article quality on a 1- to 3-star scale. Placing your cursor over the stars should give you a pop-up describing the article's quality (Low/Medium/High), current assessment class, and predicted assessment class.

The method we use to predict article quality also allows us to assess whether an article might need specific types of work in order to improve its quality. The work needed might not correspond to cleanup tags added to the article, since our method is not based on those. We have added five columns reflecting this work assessment, where a red X indicates improvement is needed. Placing your cursor over an X should give you a pop-up with a short description of the work needed. The five columns seek to answer the following five questions:

Content
Is more content needed?
Headings
Does this article have an appropriate section structure?
Images
Is the number of illustrative images about right?
Links
Does this article link to enough other Wikipedia articles?
Sources
For its length, is there an appropriate number of citations to sources in this article?

SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. We appreciate that you have signed up to receive suggestions regularly, your contributions make Wikipedia better — thanks for helping!

WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre

Hello! Now, some of you might be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around (to the right). The answer? WikiProject Good articles will be launching a Recruitment Centre very soon! The centre will allow all users to be taught how to review Good article nominations by experts just like you! However, in order for the Recruitment Centre to open in the first place, we need some volunteers:
  • Recruiters: The main task of a recruiter is to teach users that have never reviewed a Good article nomination how to review one. To become a recruiter, all you have to do is meet this criteria. If we don't get at least 5-10 recruiters to start off with, the Recruitment Centre will not open. If interested, make sure you meet the criteria, read the process and add your name to the list of recruiters. (One of the great things about being a recruiter is that there is no set requirement of what must be taught and when. Instead, all the content found in the process section is a guideline of the main points that should be addressed during a recruitment session...you can also take an entire different approach if you wish!) If you think you will not have the time to recruit any users at this time but are still interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters but just fill in the "Status" parameter with "Not Available".
  • Co-Director: The current Director for the centre is me (Dom497). Another user that would be willing to help with some of the tasks would be helpful. Tasks include making sure recruiters are doing what they should be (teaching!), making sure all recruitments are archived correctly, updating pages as needed, answering any questions, and distributing the feedback form. If interested, please contact me (Dom497).
  • Nominators, please read this: If you are not interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still help. In some cases a nominator may have an issue with an "inexperienced" editor (the recruitee) reviewing one of their nominations. To minimize the chances of this happening, if you are fine with a recruitee reviewing one of your nominations under the supervision of the recruiter, please add your name to the list at the bottom of this page. By adding your name to this list, chances are that your nomination will be reviewed more quickly as the recruitee will be asked to choose a nomination from the list of nominators that are OK with them reviewing the article.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing this program bring new reviewers to the Good article community and all the positive things it will bring along.

A message will be sent out to all recruiters regarding the date when the Recruitment Centre will open when it is determined. The message will also contain some further details to clarify things that may be a bit confusing.--Dom497 (talk)

Thank for your interest in the Template:History of Christianity and your block to enforce discussion. I did not, however, understand your advice to take my "disputes there... to the Talk page", etc. since that is what I have been doing. tahc chat 18:12, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

Posting to the talk page but also continuing the reverts is not really ending the edit war. The point is to cease back-and-forth editing until the discussion has reached some kind of conclusion.

List of goat breeds

Hi Steven,

Thank you for contacting me about the goat breed articles. I have responded to your comments on the corresponding talk page.

Neelix (talk) 22:03, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi Steven,
It has been three days since I responded to your comments, and I see that you have been editing other articles even up to today. We aren't going to come to an agreement on these articles if we don't discuss them. If no objections are made over the coming couple days, I think that I would be justified in reverting your bold splits.
Neelix (talk) 14:05, 4 July 2013 (UTC)
@Neelix: thanks for the courtesy reminder. I'll reply on the talk page now. Steven Walling • talk 18:33, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

A comment

Incidentally, if you want your actions to be clearly understood as being taken in a personal capacity [5], then it might be helpful if you avoid going out of your way to mention that you work for the WMF when explaining them. Like, for example, in your message to me announcing that I had been reverted.

Oh, and for the record, admins are generally encouraged to discuss issues first rather than simply reverting each other. I announced my change at WP:VE/F, and would have been happy to discuss it further, but you felt a need to revert first and then tell me how I was clearly wrong. Frankly, your approach to this issue felt more than a little rude. Dragons flight (talk) 01:18, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

I apologize, sincerely, if you felt slighted or disrespected in any way. Since you didn't mention any discussion in your comment, I could only assume you were being bold as you said, and had not announced/discussed the change beforehand. In the spirit of WP:BRD and because this is a primary action on the edit interface, I do think the right thing to do was to revert for now and discuss the proposal to change it. Steven Walling • talk 04:46, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
"I could only assume...", except that's not true. You could have asked, or you could have checked what links here on the message, or you could have checked WP:VE/F, or could have checked the bugzilla entry which mentions that there was discussion on VE/F, etc. Editing the interface at all is "bold", but is seems unreasonable to assume that anyone would change the interface without having a reason for it, which you could have learned with a little effort.
On the broader point, I agree that ultimately the right thing to do is have the VE team change the default label, but with hundreds of bugs to work on I didn't imagine something like this was high on their priority list. On the other hand this is one of the few frequently repeated UI complaints that we can locally do something about without having to wait for the VE team. I would have assumed that enwiki would settle on something, probably with some iteration, and then the VE team would probably copy us. Personally, I don't see the point of reverting back to a bad interface just to hold a discussion that might hopefully make the interface even better. We can do these things iteratively. Thanks for your reply re: "new user mode". I have responded to the original Teahouse post, and also have a direct reply to your message on my talk page.

In short, this whole experience has turned up a number of resources, and I see the challenge, at this point as: how do we put this motley mess of widgets together into a reasonable toolkit? I see your tool, "new user mode" as an important, integral part of that toolkit, and that the problem is not so much the tool itself, but rather in how the tool was being used.

I know I've got some pretty lengthy replies, so please, no rush, but when you have a moment, you're welcome to consider my thoughts and see if we can work together on a simple but effective solution.

This is a fair warning ...

Whack!

You've been whacked with a wet trout.

Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know that you did something silly.

I'm giving both of you a whack for that exchange on my user talk page. I'm putting you on guard that I'm armed, and I'm ready to use it. I will get the two of you to play nice. You may check out my response ... you will find that I've decided to take preemptive action, and established a Debate Arena to make sure the discussion that the two of you clearly need to have, with each other, happens fairly, fully, and that neither of you get hurt in the process. I know full well you're really on the same side of things, but I've got to get the both of you to see that. I'm doing this for your own protection. I'm not going to let a discussion turn abusive on my page. I insist on treating the both of you, fairly, equally, and professionally. We will get to a resolution of your differences. I know both of you mean well ... you just can't see that, yet. You will, trust me. I've been an underdog in an unfair fight far too long to let it happen to someone else.

I don't know if you've seen my previous comments on your exchange or not, but if you have, then I must apologize that I won't be able to moderate your discussion. Unfortunately, I've gotten some bad news and will have to be leaving soon. Thanks for your help, and I wish you the best of luck in your future affairs. GabrielD2 (talk) 12:17, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

Half million award

The Half Million Award
For your contributions to bring Sheep (estimated annual readership: 937,000) to Featured Article status, I hereby present you the Half Million Award. Congratulations on this rare accomplishment, and thanks for all you do for Wikipedia's readers. -- Khazar2 (talk) 16:41, 30 August 2013 (UTC)

The Million Award is a new initiative to recognize the editors of Wikipedia's most-read content; you can read more about the award and its possible tiers (Quarter Million Award, Half Million Award, and Million Award) at Wikipedia:Million Award. You're also welcome to display this userbox:

This editor won the Half Million Award for bringing Sheep to Featured Article status.

If I've made any error in this listing, please don't hesitate to correct it; if for any reason you don't feel you deserve it, please don't hesitate to remove it; if you know of any other editor who merits one of these awards, please don't hesitate to give it; if you yourself deserve another award from any of the three tiers, please don't hesitate to take it! Cheers, -- Khazar2 (talk) 16:41, 30 August 2013 (UTC)

P.S. Came so close to a Million Award--I thought for sure this one would make it. Is there a peak season for sheep interest that I should check? -- Khazar2 (talk) 16:41, 30 August 2013 (UTC)

@Khazar2: Hey, many thanks for the award! This is a great looking award, and super fun to get. Is there a list of potential winners out there, so I could help spread some appreciation for others? As for the Million Award... I'm just fine with a mere half. ;) Steven Walling • talk 05:04, 3 September 2013 (UTC)
You're very welcome! I've been finding winners by consulting Wikipedia:Lists of popular pages by WikiProject and User:West.andrew.g/Popular_pages and looking for popular pages that have reached GA or FA-level; from there people have been giving me additional tips for qualifying articles by themselves or others. If you wanted to take a look at a list in either place and hand some out, I'd really appreciate it. And thanks again for all your great work on ovine topics-- Khazar2 (talk) 11:32, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

Laurel Lodged topic ban editing Roman Catholic church pages

I've been having similar issues with her edit wars for over a year in the catspace for Roman Catholic dioceses. She keeps trying to depreciate the established category structure in favor of her own which removes the 'Roman Catholic church', and asserts that the Catholic church didn't exist prior to the reformation. This is problematic for the wikipedia as a whole. She's been sufficiently persistent to get into edit wars and disputes with a variety of editors on these pages. Would you support a topic ban? I'd like to start a request for comment on her editing and editing habits. I'm sure she's a fine editor - just not on Roman Catholic pages where she continually pushes for her POV. Thanks for your time. Benkenobi18 (talk) 02:05, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

Vo Nguyen Giap's first wife

Hi I have checked the source on this (McDonald's bio of Giap, based largely on interviews with him)and confirmed that the name of Giap's first wife appears there as it does in the Wikipedia article. It may of course be wrong as I don't believe McDonald spoke Vietnamese; he was basically a military historian so the detail's of Giap's early family life were perhaps not of primary importance to him; or he might easily have got his notes mixed up over such a detail. Anyway, that's what that source says. If there are more reliable sources which give a different name then I've no problem with changing it. Thanks Mccapra (talk) 08:52, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

GAN December 2013 Backlog Drive

Hello! A GAN Backlog Drive will begin in less than 4 days!

In past Backlog Drives, the goal was to reduce the backlog of Good article nominations. In the upcoming drive, another goal will be added - raising as much money as we can for the Wikimedia Foundation. How will this work? Well, its pretty simple. Any user interested in donating can submit a pledge at the Backlog Drive page (linked above). The pledge should mention the amount of money the user is willing to donate per review. For example, if a user pledges 5 cents per review and 100 nominations are reviewed, the total donation amount is $5.00.

At the time this message was sent out, two users have submitted pledges for a total of 8 cents per review. All pledges, no matter how much money, are greatly appreciated. Also, in no way is this saying you must make a pledge.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or leave a message on the Backlog Drive talk page. And remember, there are less than 4 days before the drive starts!--EdwardsBot (talk) 03:09, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

GAN December 2013 Backlog Drive

Hello! Just a friendly reminder that the GAN Backlog Drive has begun and will end on December 31, 2013!

If you have any questions or want to comment about something regarding the drive, post them here--EdwardsBot (talk) 00:02, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

The article

It was WhitePages (company). The initial GA review here was a quick-fail with basically the only justification being that I had a disclosed COI. I pinged another editor here, who raised the issue at the GAN talk page here and within hours we had apologies all around. Now it's my 15th GA and he even gave me a barnstar and noted on the GAN Talk page how my approach is different than other COIs they encountered.

It makes me very happy just talking about it, because it's such a great mini turn-around story, where a potentially contentious situation turned into oodles of Wiki-love, good-faith and more GA articles. CorporateM (Talk) 16:06, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi Steven, Happy New Year! I was delighted to see you at RFPP a few days ago; I'm always happy to see an old name! :) Best. Acalamari 11:46, 1 January 2014 (UTC)

@Acalamari: Long time no see! Many thanks for the nice message, and a happy new year to you too. I was trying to help out doing admin patrol at RFPP over the holidays, since things can get backed up with more people away. Hope you're doing well? Steven Walling • talk 04:56, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
You're welcome, and thanks for the RFPP help. :) Yes, I'm well, too! I'm still quite active around here. Congratulations on the work you do at the Foundation itself! Acalamari 10:09, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Banana slug identification?

Hello Steven, I remember you of course. I am not at all expert on the West Coast non-marine fauna, but I would say this handsome beast is indeed a banana slug -- sometimes they are all tan, brown, or tan with darker spots; they don't have to be yellow. However there are actually three species of banana slug, all of them in the genus Ariolimax. Since you were in or near redwood forest by the coast (?) this might possibly be Ariolimax columbianus, but I have to dash off to see someone this morning and will have to look up more info later today or tomorrow. Talk to you later, Invertzoo (talk) 14:29, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Again my guess is Ariolimax columbianus. Supposedly the position of the pneumostome (breathing pore) behind the mid-point of the mantle (the saddle-shaped area) helps to identify this species, but it also may be the case that the three species can't be separated with certainty without dissection of the internal genitalia. How big was this critter? I believe that Ariolimax columbianus is the biggest of the three banana slug species. More info here. Invertzoo (talk) 13:59, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

@Invertzoo: Many thanks for investigating this for me! I really do appreciate it. I'll categorize the image accordingly. :) Steven Walling • talk 03:42, 19 January 2014 (UTC)

My pleasure Steven, sorry I could not be more precise on the species level. Invertzoo (talk) 21:13, 19 January 2014 (UTC)

Draft cleanup

Sorry I didn't notice your comment before. I've added some reasons to Template:Draft cleanup to make it clearer; perhaps I should just delete the generalized message if no reason is given. Wnt (talk) 20:10, 20 January 2014 (UTC)
