WikiProject Dispute Resolution

Welcome to WikiProject Dispute Resolution, a collaboration between several Wikipedians dedicated to improving dispute resolution on Wikipedia. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions and various resources; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians interested in dispute resolution. If you would like to help, please join the project, inquire on the talk page and see the to-do list below.

Goals

[edit]
  • Grow the ranks of editors who are active in dispute resolution, to increase the amount of disputes that get handled properly and resolved, as opposed to getting mismanaged or ignored, resulting in escalation. In progress
  • Make dispute resolution more streamline and less "processy".  In progress

Scope

[edit]
  • Improve visibility of Wikipedia disputes (Make it easier for people to access DR and for mediators to find the disputes to help resolve them)
  • Improve the understanding of users who work in both content and conduct dispute resolution, with ways to tackle and resolve a variety of disputes.

  1. AGK [] I would participate in a discussion about any area of the Wikipedia dispute resolution process, but I am especially interested in the higher-level components. 10:02, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  2. Mark Miller (talk · contribs) I did not realize this was a project. I'm in. 21:40, 30 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  3. Andrewaskew (talk · contribs) Looking to raise the level of discourse, and promote a more collegial & civil atmosphere in general. 06:09, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  4. Andrewcrawford (talk · contribs) I support the idea of having more better organised dispute resolution process, and a proper way, i hope we can make higher up stages more binding for content disputes, especially when you have sensitive subjects. It be nice to have a way to jump a few steps if agree by a project that lower steps in the resolution process are unlikely to work. the biggest one i have tried to steer in the right directions is on on Rangers F.C. as the problems relates to POV pushing and Reliable sources giving contradicting information such that its impossible to resolve as neither side is willing to comprise. 16 August 2012 {UTC}
  5. Aschmidt (talk · contribs) Following developments as a member of the ArbCom in German Wikipedia. --Aschmidt (talk) 20:54, 24 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  8. Bobrayner (talk · contribs) Interested in the whole DR ecosystem, and hopefully resolving some disagreements at an earlier stage in the lifecycle before they flourish into epic disputes... 17:50, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  9. CarolMooreDC (talk) It's also important to train users in what tools to use in disputes. Even now I find myself engaged in talk page disputes far too long before going for outside help. And then too often the other part(ies) yells they are being "attacked." So knowledge on all sides is necessary. 03:30, 26 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  10. Coastside (talk · contribs) 10:20, 7 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  11. Coppertwig (talk) I very much agree with the goal "Minimize the effectiveness of aggressive out-of-policy behavior." Unfortunately, when people ask for help because others are being uncivil towards them, often the community is suspicious that they're just trying to get an advantage in a dispute, and treats them harshly. 14:20, 26 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  29. John Carter (talk · contribs) - Very much agree with SilkTork above. Also agree that, maybe, having some sort of perhaps earlier involvement in disputes related to ethnicity and religion might be very useful, if such involvement could be arranged. 21:30, 25 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  35. MichaelNetzer (talk · contribs) All issues mentioned above are compounded by the experience editors have in drawing out disputes and turning the argumentation itself into the problem, making things much more difficult to resolve. There exists a dire need for a more massive, potent and accessible DR system. This project is a welcomed step in that direction. 18:59, 27 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  43. Shooterwalker (talk · contribs) I'm interested in reforming the DR process. But let's try to work with the community instead of imposing top-down solutions. 21:07, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  44. SilkTork (talk · contribs) Dispute itself is a healthy part of any academic endeavour - what I would be interested to see is not an attempt to eliminate dispute, but to provide an informal structure that allows dispute to take place on talkpages in a supportive and neutral manner. It would be worth looking at actions that provoke negative responses in a dispute - personalising and reverting are the two major ones. 11:39, 25 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  45. slatersteven (talk · contribs) I would agree that streamlined system would make the process less painfull. Intervention at an earlier stage of dispute would be good. 20:29, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  46. Sleddog116 (talk · contribs) primarily WP:DRN, but I would like to expand to other areas of dispute resolution projects and help clean up disputed articles. 15:26, 1 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  47. Steven Zhang (talk · contribs) Interested in building a think tank for ideas to reform DR. Currently working on a central noticeboard, currently in progress at /Dispute resolution requests. 05:28, 11 November 2011 (UTC)
  48. Sunray (talk · contribs) Two aspects of disputes on Wikipedia concern me. One is a characteristic lack of civility in certain types of dispute (e.g. nationalistic, religious), especially if they are protracted. The other is positionality. By this I mean taking a POV and locking onto it (likely a worse problem online than in RL). So I do agree that earlier identification and availability of mediation would be helpful. 18:19, 25 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  55. Xavexgoem (talk · contribs) Like AGK, but I'm more interested in the low level bits.... as well as solving the civility problem mentioned by Sunray. 22:22, 11 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  56. Ynhockey (talk · contribs) 12:36, 25 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  57. Zaldax (talk · contribs) Two of the things I concern myself most with here on Wikipedia are Neutrality/NPOV/Objectivity, and maintaining civility. I've seen too many important, but controversial, discussions become derailed because people got too wrapped up in emotions to make any progress. Willing to help solve any problems related to the above, especially civility. Zaldax (talk) 19:44, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Idea lab

[edit]

This is a list of ideas for improving dispute resolution, whether by instituting new policies, new processes, more help for editors or mediators, or anything else you can think of. You can either link to other pages from here, or include your ideas directly. If things get too long we will put them in a sub-page. Please add everything you can think of!
