Reasons to keep the country article at Republic of Ireland

[edit]
  • Ireland is ambiguous.
  • Republic of Ireland solves the ambiguity problem, clearly being about the country rather than the island of Ireland.
  • The Irish government made “Republic of Ireland” an official description.
  • Republic of Ireland is a common alternative name for the country.
  • The Irish government, members of the Irish parliament and the Irish media have used the term on many occasions and continue to use it.
  • The country’s football team plays under the name Republic of Ireland.
  • Republic of Ireland has been the location of the article on the country for years.
  • Not all country articles are at their primary common name.
  • The main excuse for change is the claim “Republic of Ireland” is pushing a British point of view, but the above prove this is not the case.

Reasons against moving the country article to Ireland.

[edit]
  • Ireland is ambiguous.
  • The island of Ireland is the primary entity known as Ireland.
  • There is no alternative name in English for the island of Ireland.
  • The island of Ireland has had the name Ireland for centuries, unlike the country which adopted it in the 20th century.
  • Over 5 million people live on the island of Ireland, over a million of them do not live in the Republic of Ireland.
