[edit]From Common Turkic *ārïk (“aryk, ditch; river, creek, brook”), from Proto-Turkic *ār-~*ar-~*ïr- (“to flow”). Cognate to Ottoman Turkish آرق (arq), Turkish ark, dialectal Turkish arığ, Azerbaijani arx, Turkmen āryk, Uzbek ariq, Kazakh арық (aryq), Kyrgyz арык (arık), Bashkir арыҡ (arıq), Tatar арык (arıq).
