From Common Turkic *ārïk (aryk, ditch; river, creek, brook), from Proto-Turkic *ār-~*ar-~*ïr- (to flow). Cognate to Ottoman Turkish آرق (arq), Turkish ark, dialectal Turkish arığ, Azerbaijani arx, Turkmen āryk, Uzbek ariq, Kazakh арық (aryq), Kyrgyz арык (arık), Bashkir арыҡ (arıq), Tatar арык (arıq).
