Etymology

Perhaps from արմ (arm, root) +‎ -ան- (-an-); compare dialectal փայտ կտրիլ (pʻayt ktril, to be petrified). Alternatively from Proto-Armenian *arm- (to bind fast, tie, fit), seen in յարմար (yarmar).
