Etymology

[edit]

The origin is unknown. The word is found in the neighboring languages: Northern Kurdish kade, Turkish kete, Azerbaijani kətə, Georgian ქადა (kada), Laz ქადა (kada), Udi ката (kata). Justi derived all from French gâteau but this is not accepted by Ačaṙyan, and J̌ahukyan considers the similarity to be accidental.
