Etymology

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish آلداتمق (aldatmak), ultimately from Proto-Turkic *āl (device, trick, deceit; to deceive). Cognate with Old Uyghur 𐽰𐽰𐾁𐾀𐽰𐽹𐽰𐽷 (altamak).[1]
