[edit]bả + vai (“shoulder”); two possibilities for the former element:
- It either derives from Proto-Mon-Khmer *paʔ ~ *pah (“shoulder”) (Shorto #100), whence also Proto-Monic *pnah > Mon ပၞး (nah);
- Or was borrowed from a Tai language, from Proto-Tai *C̥.baːᴮ (“shoulder”); compare Thai บ่า (bàa).
