[edit]From Middle English bischadewen, bischadwen (also beschaden, bescheaden), from Old English besċeaduwian, besċeadan (“to overshadow”), equivalent to be- + shadow. Cognate with Dutch beschaduwen (“to shade, adumbrate, shadow”), German beschatten (“to shade, shadow, overshadow”).
