Etymology

From Middle English bischadewen, bischadwen (also beschaden, bescheaden), from Old English besċeaduwian, besċeadan (to overshadow), equivalent to be- +‎ shadow. Cognate with Dutch beschaduwen (to shade, adumbrate, shadow), German beschatten (to shade, shadow, overshadow).
