Etymology

Uncertain. The Trésor de la langue française suggests a derivation from Middle Dutch hotten (to shake) (see hocher). Other sources suggest a derivation from Latin quatiō, from Frankish *hottôn (see German hotzen), or that the word is onomatopoeic.
