Borrowed from German Graupel, derived from Graupe (grain of pearl barley), ultimately from Proto-Slavic *krupa.

  1. (meteorology, uncountable) A precipitation that forms when supercooled droplets of water condense on a snowflake.
    Synonym: popcorn snow
