heten
Dutch
[edit]Pronunciation
[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]From Middle Dutch hêten, from Old Dutch hētan, originally from the passive voice of Proto-West Germanic *haitan, from Proto-Germanic *haitaną.
Verb
[edit]heten
- (copulative) to be named; to have as name; to be called
- Deze kat heet Felix.
- This cat is called Felix.
- (copulative) to be (a translation or synonym of); to be called
- Hoe heet dat in het Frans?
- What is that in French?
- (transitive, dated) to name, to call (to provide with a name, to define a name as)
- 1900, Frederik van Eeden, Van de koele meren des Doods, W. Versluys (publ., 1st ed.), page 7.
- Haar naam heet ik Hedwig Marga de Fontayne.
- I call her name Hedwig Marga de Fontayne.
- Synonym: noemen
- 1900, Frederik van Eeden, Van de koele meren des Doods, W. Versluys (publ., 1st ed.), page 7.
- (copulative, dated) to be claimed; to be asserted
- Het heet dat hij ziek is.
- It's being claimed that he is sick.
- (copulative, dated) to mean; to have as meaning
Usage notes
[edit]- In a lot of dialects and colloquially the verb noemen (“call, give a name”) is used instead of heten. This is generally considered incorrect[1] and is not usually tolerated in written Dutch.
