[edit]13th century. From Gothic 𐌻𐍉𐍆𐌰 (lōfa, “palm of the hand”), from Proto-Germanic *lōfô (“palm of the hand”).[1] Alternatively, from Suevic [Term?] *glufa,[2] from Proto-Germanic *galōfô (compare dialectal Spanish goluba).
