From meco (dissolute man) + trefe (mischievous), first element from Latin moechus (adulterer, fornicator), second element of unknown origin.(Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)

Or, possibly of shared origin with Spanish mequetrefe by borrowing from Arabic مُخَطْرِف (muḵaṭrif, raving).
