Related to Old English ræcc (English rach); a diminutive of the same Germanic source yielded Dutch rekel. Thought by Jan de Vries to be derived from Old Norse rekja in the sense 'to stretch out', itself deriving from *rakjaną, thus referring to a 'long, narrow dog'.[1]
