From Latin recalescere (to grow warm again), from re- +‎ calēscere (to grow warm), inchoative of calēre (to be warm). In use since at least 1873 (Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary, published 1985). By surface analysis, re- +‎ calescence.
