From Middle English seewater, se water, from Old English sǣwæter (seawater), equivalent to sea +‎ water. Cognate with Saterland Frisian Seewoater (seawater), West Frisian seewetter (seawater), Dutch zeewater (seawater), Icelandic sjóvatn (seawater).
