[edit]From Middle Dutch verwerren, derived from werren (“to confuse, be confused”), originally a strong verb. Analysable as war (“disorder”) + ver- -en, but war, Middle Dutch werre, is deverbal. Cognate with German verwirren. Also related with English war.
