[edit]From Andalusian Arabic الشطرنج (aš-šaṭranǧ), from Arabic شَطْرَنْج (šaṭranj, “chess”), from Classical Persian شترنگ (šatrang), from Middle Persian [script needed] (ctlng /čatrang/, “chess”), from Sanskrit चतुरङ्ग (caturaṅga, “four parts of an army: king, elephants, horses, foot soldiers”).
