Whilst Purple Herons tend to breed in extensive reedbeds in Europe, in Africa they frequently build tree nests. This bird had a nest only 1.5 metres up in a dead tree in flooded woodland on the edge of Lake Baringo. The nest was fully exposed to the strong equatorial sun so I took the image with a 500mm lens + 1.4x TC (standing up in a small boat) to avoid disturbance as if the adult was scared off the nest the chicks would cook!
