Spheniscus demersus, African Penguin. A pudgy, flightless, black-and-white seabird found along the coast of South Africa and Namibia. Extremely ungainly on land but a supreme swimmer in the open ocean, where individuals dive down as far as 60 m. It is a pursuit diver and feeds primarily on fish and squid, and also on crustaceans, primarily krills and shrimps. It breeds in colonies and pairs return to the same site each year. Call is a repeated, donkey-like braying: “haaaaaaahh, haaaaaaahh”.
