The African penguins at the San Diego Zoo will soon have a new home. Construction is underway on the penguin habitat inside the Conrad Prebys Africa Rocks exhibit – the largest expansion in the Zoo’s History.

Spheniscus demersus, African Penguin. A pudgy, flightless, black-and-white seabird found along the coast of South Africa and Namibia. Extremely ungainly on land but a supreme swimmer in the open ocean, where individuals dive down as far as 60 m. It is a pursuit diver and feeds primarily on fish and squid, and also on crustaceans, primarily krills and shrimps. It breeds in colonies and pairs return to the same site each year. Call is a repeated, donkey-like braying: “haaaaaaahh, haaaaaaahh”.
