Children Learn What They Live. "One of my earliest memories as a child is of this poem by Dorothy Law Nolte. I was adopted at birth, and the judge gave a copy of the poem to my parents. It sat on my dresser in a frame, and I still have it today. If you know an expecting mother or new parents, this would make a nice, inexpensive gift. Children Learn What They Live.... This poem hung inside my mom's laundry closet my whole childhood, and we crocheted it for each of my two children when they were born.

Children learn what they live. Put kids in a class and they will live out their lives in an invisible cage, isolated from their chance at community; interrupt kids with bells and horns all the time and they will learn that nothing is important or worth finishing; ridicule them and they will retreat from human association; shame them and they will find a hundred ways to get even. The habits taught in large-scale organizations are deadly.

When I was growing up this plaque hung in our hallway. I probably read it at least a thousand times. I loved it. I asked my mom questions about it, definitions of words I didn't understand at the time --like what it means to "condemn". If I'm being honest, I have thought of these words many, many times in my decade plus of parenting.
