A big NY State Railways Peter Witt car pushes through downtown Syracuse NY in a late 1940 snowstorm. NY State Railways was formed in 1909 by the NY Central Railroad to consolidate their many traction properties. NYSR operated an extensive interurban system as well as city lines in Rochester, Syrauce, Utica, Oneida and Rome NY. The Syracuse Division once operated 88 miles of city lines, with the change-over to buses beginning in 1924. The last day for Syracuse streetcars was January 4, 1941.
