Description This flag is based on the Medieval symbol of the Holy Roman Empire. In middle ages rectangle flags were not in use. The symbol is used since the 14th century. The original symbol was a one headed eagle on gold field. Maybe in the effect of the Fall of Constantinaples the Empire started to use a double-headed eagle. The two heads symbols the power of the church and state. The black eagle on gold field is the symbol of Germany still today.
