Medusa and her two sisters, Euryale and Stheno were "gorgons." They were all children of the ancient marine deities Phorcys and his sister Ceto. They lived on an island called Sarpedon, near Cisthene.

There are many misconceptions today about Medusa, but one of them was that Medusa and her sisters (Gorgon Sisters) were born of monstrous form.
