When Jaya Thursfield found a house he wanted to buy in Japan a few years ago, friends and family told him to forget it. The place wasn’t worth the trouble, they said. After all, it stood in a forest of shoulder-high weeds after being abandoned about seven years earlier — one of the millions of vacant houses known as akiya, Japanese for “empty house” — throughout the country.

Shane Thoms is what's known as a "haikyoist," someone who goes on urban exploration missions to capture the modern ruins of Japan.

What looks like an old and abandoned Japanese village is actually just a movie set. Many of the latest Japanese Samurai movies where filmed here. There are reconstructions of a farming village, a fishing village and a post town of the Edo period (1603–1867).
