In this poem, ‘The Bee is Not Afraid of Me’, she tells of her special closeness to the natural world, to the “pretty people in the woods” — those animals and vistas of the environment which she is quite comfortable personifying as ‘people’, just like us, alive with character and personality. The brooks laugh, the breezes play. It is clear that she feels more at home among the woods than in human society. Perhaps there is an inherent innocence to the natural world that she struggles to see in herself.
