The reviews are in for the new movie “Twisters“, and it looks like the sequel will be better received than the original film from 1996. But can it make as much money at the box office? That might be tougher!
The first “Twister” was written by Michael Crichton, the author behind “Jurassic Park”. It did a great job of making tornadoes feel super scary with special effects. The story of storm chasers was exciting too. While the plot hasn’t aged that well, the tornado scenes are still awesome.
This new “Twisters” has a different cast, like Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell as storm chasers. But it brings back elements like following scientists tracking dangerous storms. Some reviews say the twisters look even cooler thanks to improvements in CGI over 25 years.
Back in 1996, “Twister” was the second highest grossing movie of the year, making nearly $500 million worldwide! That’s huge for a movie with a budget of only $90 million. It did better than big hits like “Mission Impossible” and “Space Jam”.
Will “Twisters” make that kind of money? It has a much bigger budget of $200 million due to fancier effects. To really succeed, analysts say it needs over $500 million globally to pay that off and turn a profit. Its opening weekend was solid but not huge, so it has work to do.
Big movies like “Inside Out 2” and “Dune 2” will be tough to beat. Those made over $1 billion each so far in 2024. If “Twisters” can pass “Dune 2” totals of $712 million, it will match the original’s box office success from 1996. Fingers crossed the twisters deliver!
