Bikeshare Gender Maps

Data and code for maps showing male/female ridership at each station in three bikesharing programs: New York City's Citi Bike, Chicago's Divvy, and Boston's Hubway. Published June 16, 2014.

Data

The raw data comes directly from the bikeshare services. (For details and links, see BuzzFeedNews/bikeshare-data-sources).

Data processing

  • scripts/process-data.py handles most of the data processing. Processed data, in CSV and GeoJSON formats, can be found here.

  • notebooks/aggregate-data.ipynb contains the code for calculating overall male/female ridership rates and generating the female-ridership-by-day-of-week charts.

  • For more details, see the "Data and Methodology" section here.
