Abstract

(English Summary: The monitoring of patent portfolios should uncover basic patents as well as fencing and surrounding attempts. The present article introduces with the Patent Chart a patent illustration, based on the citation visualisation, as a new concept for strategy monitoring. In conflict to the known procedures it is made possible to analyse simultaneously all patents in a complex field of technology, in the network of their citation relationships, and to record their chronological developments. The foundation of the graphic examination is based on the uncovered Patent Chart, the importance of all the patents in a technological field, and the strategic relevance of their citation relationships. The Patent Chart can be used for repeated monitoring of the patent portfolios and as basic information for the strategic planning of patent politics. The procedure points out strengths and weaknesses of the patent base of the company in a field of technology, analyses the patent politics of the competition in detail of individual patents, and advises on possible M&A partners.)
