Basic Proportionality Theorem or Thales Theorem Statement: If a line is drawn parallel to one side of a triangle intersecting the other two sides, then it divides the two sides in the same ratio. Given: A triangle ABC in which DE || BC, and intersects AB in D and AC in E. Converse of Basic Proportionality Theorem […]

Thales of Mileus was the first individual to have a mathematical discovery that was attributed. He’s best known for his work in calculating the heights of pyramids and the distance of the ships from the shore using geometry. He is the first known individual to use deductive reasoning applied to geometry by deriving four corollaries to Thales' theorem. ( 0 = (A − B) · (B − C) = (A − B) · (B + A) = |A|2 − |B|2. ) Deductive Reasoning, Math Geometry, Influential People, The Heights, In The Heights, A A, Geometry, Male Sketch, The First

MVP on Instagram: "Pythagorean theorem from a (semi) circle!

This is a short, animated visual proof of the Pythagorean theorem (the right triangle theorem) using the semicircle and Thales triangle theorem. This theorem states the square of the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of squares of the two other side lengths.

This animation is based on a proof due to Michael Hardy from the November, 1986 issue of The College Math Journal (https://doi.org/10.2307/2686255).

Thales of Miletus is famous for much more then his math but we will focus on that, he is known for discovering how to use geometry to measure the distance to ship at sea and the heights of pyramids. He is also known for Thales Theorem, which consisted of five theorems of geometry. From this he is the father of geometry of lines, creator of abstract geometry.
