The essays in this volume, authored by an international group of scholars, offer readers an opportunity to consider the many dimensions and possibilities of the notion of &quot;the holy&quot; (das Heilige) in his thinking. The authors in this volume document the multiple texts and contexts of Heidegger&#39;s discussions of the holy, and they offer detailed readings and their own particular interpretations and applications. The chapters, taken together, make a significant contribution not only to Heidegger scholarship but also to our understanding of our fundamental human situation in relation to Being-as-the holy.

The aesthetics of Roman Ingarden and Nicolai Hartmann are phenomenological in the Husserlian sens... more The aesthetics of Roman Ingarden and Nicolai Hartmann are phenomenological in the Husserlian sense of the term. Although both Ingarden as well as Hartmann owe their ideas to Husserl, each of them worked independently of the other and provided different accounts with regard to the anatomy and the mode of existence of the literary work of art, which have proven to be invaluable for its study. While Ingarden’s account utilizes the properties of conscious acts to explain the appearance of an aesthetic object, Hartmann employs the founding properties of the conscious acts in the human temporality, within which these acts are performed. However, there are also some specific similarities to be found in their theories of ontology, concerning the “stratified structures” of the different kinds of aesthetic objects. The present paper is an attempt to develop a comparison with respect to certain questions related to Ingarden’s and Hartmann’s ontologies of the literary work of art. The aim is to answer these questions from the point of view of both Ingarden as well as Hartmann.

The paper discusses the problem of time as one of the most fundamental aspects of narrative ficti... more The paper discusses the problem of time as one of the most fundamental aspects of narrative fiction. If a narrative is defined as a series of events moving in a sequential relation, then time is a matter of linearity. The chronological progression becomes the standard pattern for time and narrative alike. But if a narrative is defined instead according to the relationship between the sequence of events in a story and the representation of those events to be told—between story and discourse—then time becomes a more complex hermeneutic and phenomenological framework. Within this framework, I take a brief glance at the accounts of the relationship between time and narrative by attempting to elucidate the complex dimension of narrative temporality. My thesis assumes that if narrative time is meaningful to the extent that it becomes a condition of temporal experience (Ricoeur), then this synthesizing activity is a temporal process, which reveals the paradox of human time.

Being as the holy bespeaks the poet in a message to which he responds by articulating the address in words. Following Heidegger’s thought that poetry (poiesis) is the essence of language and of all arts, and juxtaposing it with Wittgenstein’s view of language, we will find out that to trace the mystery of language back to its origin means placing ourselves outside of the world, passing thus into the realm of silence. Drawing an analogy between Hölderlin’s idea of the holy as the immediate and Wittgenstein’s conception of the mystical, my thesis assumes that language is precisely what poetry cannot name.

Heidegger’s reading of Hölderlin brings the essence of language into the center of his thought. In Heidegger’s view, the poet’s task is to name what is “holy” just as the thinker’s task is to proclaim “Being.” Yet it is the poets who, as guardians of the Logos, are closer than others to its source, the poets who can hear “the peal of stillness” in language and echo it. So for Heidegger, Hölderlin’s poetry is the returning home to a nearness to the origin, that is, to the Logos itself, which is not due to concealment, but to the open space as “clearing.”
Juxtaposing Heidegger’s discussion of the “holy” with Wittgenstein’s conception of language as “the inexpressible” as presented in his Tractatus, I maintain that the holy is the immediate that cannot be said, but which is the principle of all saying. Being as the holy refers to the poet who responds to the Saying by articulating this Saying in founding language, but what is made manifest thereby retains, nonetheless, a dimension of concealment.

The present article is an attempt to unfold the phenomenological philosophy of Husserl and Heideg... more The present article is an attempt to unfold the phenomenological philosophy of Husserl and Heidegger pertaining to the literary work of art and other art works. The aim is to show the sense of phenomenology in view of the treatment of the literary work and other works of art by each thinker. Though Husserl did not pursue a theory of art, nevertheless, in his lectures, letters, and sketches published posthumously, he provided conceptual resources and suggestions about aesthetic consciousness, which many theorists have found particularly apt for literary thinking. Following Husserl’s phenomenological reduction we examine the world of the literary work, not as an objective reality, but as a Lebenswelt (lifeworld), a reality as experienced by an individual subject. Heidegger’s phenomenology, on the other hand, is ontological. Retaining some of Husserl’s analysis of the life-world, Heidegger was able to see the world as most intimately related to Dasein, as always already given in Dasein’s being as being-in-the-world, and thereby make it visible for others to see. After discussing The Origin of the Work of Art in some detail, we will present the method by which Heidegger poses the question of being, relating it to language.

The notion of concretization introduced by Roman Ingarden in his seminal work The Literary Work o... more The notion of concretization introduced by Roman Ingarden in his seminal work The Literary Work of Art makes the reader the one responsible for the creation of the literary work of art as an aesthetic object. Prior to the act of reading, “the work itself,” in Ingarden’s analysis, is a structure of various strata: the stratum of verbal sounds, the stratum of meaning units, the stratum of schematized aspects, and the stratum of represented objectivities. The reader concretizes the work, turning the schematic formation into an accomplished aesthetic object. Concretization is accomplished by adding determinations to the schemata of the text on all strata. By way of their psychic operations readers fill in places of indeterminacy and establish the world of the literary work of art. Wolfgang Iser takes up Ingarden’s concept of places of indeterminacy to develop his own position.
