These literary heavyweights from Latin America attempt to demystify the notion of fair play in football by laying bare the mechanisms of foul play and forecasting concerns about inherent venalities produced by increased financial influence over the game in the 1950s and 1960s. By portraying commodification of the professional football spectacle as dangerous to individuals and society, these precursory works mark the beginning of a satirical tradition of denouncing the uglier sides of the beautiful game in football fiction from Latin America. Mainardi is best recognized in Brazil for his provocative, satirical column in the popular weekly societal magazine Veja and his participation in the weekly television talk show Manhattan Con nection. It is from his irreverent column in Veja that Mainardi has achieved national recognition as a controversial critic who tends to offer biting commentary on contemporary issues. His column confronts Brazilian political figures, domestic and foreign politics, and a wide variety of contempo rary issues in Brazilian society. 1 The significant time that he has spent outside of Brazil (including a formative overseas experience in the UK in early adulthood, as wen as nearly a decade of shared residence between Brazil and Italy) provides him with a unique, almost literal, "foreigner in his own land" perspective on Brazilian society.
