The Kavli Foundation identifies potentially transformative ideas and catalyzes opportunities that unlock the benefits of science to create lasting impact for science and society.

Our funding is organized around four areas—astrophysics, nanoscience, neuroscience, and science and society. Strategic funding opportunities are identified and implemented using the expertise of our staff, expert advice from our President's Advisory Committee, idea generation from the community, and consultation with our Board of Directors. Our programs aim to:

• Pursue new and impactful directions
• Promote innovation through strategic partnerships
• Diversify and build the Kavli community

Signature Programs

The Kavli Prize was established to honor scientists for breakthrough discoveries in astrophysics, nanoscience and neuroscience. The Kavli Prize is a partnership with The Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Letters and The Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research. It is awarded every two years, beginning in 2008.

Kavli Institutes were established in our four scientific fields by creating long-term partnerships and commitments that are an essential part of our founder’s vision and legacy. The 20 Kavli Institutes, located at universities and research centers internationally, were endowed by The Kavli Foundation to enable basic research in astrophysics, nanoscience, neuroscience and theoretical physics. The foundation is not currently deploying endowment funding for new research institutes.
