Greeley, pauper in Nova Hantonia natus, diabolus typographi in Monte Viride laborabat, annoque 1831 ad Novum Eboracum fortunam petens migravit. Nonnullis publicationibus scriptor vel editor profuit, et se rebus Factionis Whig dedit, partes magni momenti egens in prospera expeditione comitialia Gulielmi Henrici Harrison anno 1840. Proximo anno Tribune condidit, cuius editiones hebdomadales per cursum publicum missae factae sunt maximae in Civitatibus Foederatis. Inter multas res, deductionem suadere solebat Occidentis Americani, quem terram occasionis iuvenibus et eis opera carentibus appellabat. Fecit ut locutio Go West, young man, and grow up with the country ('I ad occidentem, puer, et cum patria adolesce') populo grata esset, sed incertum est num ipse haec veba excogitaret.

Ob societatem Greeleyanam cum Gulielmo H. Seward et Thurlow Weed, tres menses in Camera Repraesentantium meruit, ubi multos per Congressum investigatum in suo diario offendit. Ad Factionem Republicanam conditam anno 1854 adiuvit, sed eo fere tempore Seward et Weed reiecit, alios candiatos praesidentiales contra Seward in Conventu Nationali Republicano anni 1860 adiuvans, ultimo favens candidato, Abrahamo Lincoln. Bello Civile Americano conflato, Praesidi Lincoln plerumque favebat, cui autem finem servitutis suasit, praeside nondum volente. Lincoln denique necato, Republicanis Totis contra Praesidem Andrean Johnson favebat.

Greeley, corruptionem administrationis Republicanae Grantianae pugnans, fuit candidatus Factionis Republicanae Liberalis in comitiis praesidentialibus anni 1872. Contra additum Factionis Democraticae subsidium, graviter victus est. Animo ad repulsam deiecto, tres hebdomades post mortuus est, solus candidatus praesidentialis factionis maioris in Civitatibus Foederatis qui inter diem comitialem et diem suffragiorum electoralium numerandorum obiit.
