Lapis runicus[1] est lapis litteris runicis inscriptus, plerumque in terra erectus, sed inscriptiones etiam in magnis saxis naturaliter in terra iacentibus reperiuntur. Traditio inscriptionis saeculo IV coepit et ad saeculum XII mansit, sed plerique lapides exeunte aetate Viccingorum inscripti sunt. Plerique in Scandinavia iacent, sed etiam in aliis locis a Normannis frequentatis inveniuntur. Saepe in inscriptionibus mortui celebrantur. Creatores lapides decorare solebant coloribus, qui iamdudum evanuerunt.
