Queer and Trans Students of Color
The Office of LGBT Life is committed to supporting the needs and experiences of queer and/or trans students of color (QTSOC). We define those students as members of the LGBTQ community who identify racially and/or ethnically as Latinx/a/o, Black/African American, Bi/Multiracial, First Nations/Native American, Asian/Pacific Islander/Desi American, and other non-white students. We understand that experiences of students at the intersection of underrepresented racial, gender identity/expression, and sexual orientation identities pose unique challenges. Civil rights advocate Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw coined the term “intersectionality”in the late 1980s to speak to these challenges and the ways in which multiple forms of oppression impact those caught in its crosshairs. As we continue to create more inclusive and equitable spaces in our office, we are committed to do the work to support our QTSOC.
As such, we strive to include all QTSOC identities in the following resources. However, if you are unable to find applicable resources on our website, please contact us at lgbt@emory.edu. We will do our best to answer any questions you may have and include these answers in this growing resource page.
With a growing number of initiatives for QTBIPOC students, the Office of LGBT Life is committed to supporting students at this intersection of identities.
QCGs are weekly, hour-long groups focusing on topics related to queer identities and are a great way to connect to the office and other queer and trans students on campus. While QCGs cover a wide range of topics, the office hosts several groups specifically centered around the experiences of queer and trans students of color. Those groups are below:
Queer and Asian
BlackOUT
Queer Trans Latinx
QTBIPOC Mixer Series
The Office offers monthly mixers for people interested in sharing the experiences queer and trans students of color across campus to meet, connect, and build community with each other and staff that care about the QTBIPOC experience.
The Office of LGBT Life has a variety of books and DVDs available to students, faculty, and staff. Our materials range from educational documentaries and theoretical works to contemporary fiction and graphic novels. Our collection of trans and QTBIPOC books is growing every day. You can even request a new book through the Office of LGBT Life.
To browse our library, feel free to stop by our office (located at COX 324) or visit the online library here.
