• Summary

  Running a mentoring program in colleges with a population under 5,000 or at two-year institutions presents unique challenges. In an engaging panel discussion focusing on the complexities of establishing and sustaining effective mentoring programs for college students, two distinguished speakers offered valuable insights, strategies, and experiences. Importantly, they approached the topic from the perspectives of both smaller institutions and two-year technical and community colleges. The speakers will not only share their successful program-building journeys but also shed light on their ongoing facilitation strategies, providing a comprehensive view of navigating the nuances of mentorship in diverse educational settings.

  Maria Vittone, Nontraditional Career, Student Support Consultant, North Hennepin Community College

  Maria Vittone serves as the director of University and Industry Partnerships and the director of the “Be Bold-Break the Mold," mentoring program for Women in Nontraditional Careers at North Hennepin Community College in Minnesota. She finds her passion in places where change and reinvention is happening. She holds that space currently for her students where she is supporting those who find themselves as ‘one of few’ in their newly chosen careers. Vittone's gender equity and mentorship program, Be Bold- Break the Mold: Women Succeed in Nontraditional Careers was a notable program singled out at North Hennepin Community College for the National HEED Award 2021 (Higher Education Excellence in Diversity). Having experienced the need to redirect her career numerous times, she can empathize and walk beside those who are brave enough to do the same.
