Clarissa Harlowe "Clara" Barton c. 1866. Known as the "Angel of the Battlefield", she worked as a nurse on the front lines during the Civil War. During the Franco-Prussian War she helped with the preparation of military hospitals. She was awarded the Golden Cross of Baden and the Prussian Iron Cross. On 21 December 1881 she founded the American Red Cross.
