It looks so clean and fresh, doesn’t it, and with so few houses built on the Hollywood hills (the Hollywoodland development took a while to really get going) it stands out so even more clearly against the empty scrubland. This photo is dated circa mid 1920s, which means the Hollywoodland sign was only a year or two old when it was taken. It looks so clean and fresh, doesn’t it, and with so few houses built on the Hollywood hills (the Hollywoodland development took a while to really get going) it stands out so even more clearly against the empty scrubland.

This clear and uninterrupted view of the Hollywood sign was taken at (what is now designated as) 3307 Deronda Drive way up in the Hollywoodland hills. The year was 1950, which means had the photo been taken a year before, the sign would have still read Hollywoodland. Well, sort of. The sign had fallen into such disrepair that the “H” had fallen over. In 1949 the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce removed the last four letters and restored the rest, which is what we’re seeing in this photo.
