Francis Gary Powers was shot down in his black U-2A over the Soviet Union on May 1st,1960,on Russia's May Day.His engine had flamed out at 60,000 feet and he could not get a restart,so he dropped to 51,000 feet and had just gotten an engine re-light when he was bracketed by SAM anti-aircraft missles.The tail failed and as the aircraft pitched nose down the wings failed and Powers bailed out.He was held prisoner for over a year and was exchanged for a Russian spy.
