Allen is favored with her affections, but she declines to marry him until he has proven his ability to refrain from drink. At the Yellow Dog tavern a man has his pocket picked by a gambler and the Indian exposes the thief. Nell draws a revolver, championing the Indian in his stand, and the money is returned to its rightful owner. Allen having satisfied her that he has lost his appetite for liquor, wins her hand, but after the marriage he relapses into his old ways, and his shiftlessness leaves Nell destitute. A former admirer of Nell, Pedro, a handsome, thrifty Mexican, is furious at the conduct of Allen. The Indian forces her to accept a bag of gold nuggets which he has found, and Allen takes it away from her and loses it gambling and drinking. The Indian tells the Mexican, who starts off to remonstrate with Allen and reaches the cabin as Allen, resenting Nell's reproaches, attacks her. Pedro interferes and is furiously set upon by Allen. In self-defense, Pedro is compelled to kill Allen, and accompanied by Nell makes his escape. The Indian, who has been trailing Pedro and has seen the struggle through the window, comes into the house. He knows that the camp will avenge Allen's death and that the Mexican will be shown neither justice nor mercy. He hides in the room and when the body of Allen is discovered the Indian is accused of the crime, and stoically makes no defense, resolved to sacrifice his life for the happiness of Nell and Pedro.
