Broodthaers was born in Brussels and had a varied early career, being, amongst other things, a book-dealer and poet. He began making art objects as an experiment when he was forty years old, partly through feeling that art might be a better way to make money than selling books....

Marcel Broodthaers was a Belgian poet, filmmaker, and visual artist.

Marcel Broodthaers lived in poverty for twenty years as a bohemian poet in Brussels. With no artistic training he turned to visual arts in 1964 as an ironic gesture, with an exhibition at the Galerie Saint-Laurent in Brussels.

Known for his associations in which he explores the nature and meaning of language, word and image, and rhetoric, the work Marcel Broodthaers created was enormously influential to future generations of artists.
