Limiting the Use of Physical Restraint

Physical restraint is the use of physical contact to limit a child’s movement. Lawful physical restraint is used only in an emergency, to protect a child from hurting himself or herself or someone else.

Physical Restraint Regulations

Rhode Island has had Physical Restraint Regulations in effect since September 1, 2002. These regulations limit the use of physical restraint and require school districts to develop policies, document incidents, and provide training.
