Born tae the surgeon William Close in Greenwich, Connecticut, Close majored in theatre an anthropology at the College of William & Mary. She begoud her perfaisional career on stage in 1974 wi Love for Love an wis maistly a New York stage actress till the early 1980s. Her wark includit Broadway productions o Barnum in 1980 an The Real Thing in 1983, for that she wan the Tony Awaird for Best Actress in a Play. Her film debut cam in The World According to Garp (1982), that wis follaed bi supportin roles in the films The Big Chill (1983) an The Natural (1984); aw three earned her nominations for the Academy Awaird for Best Supportin Actress.
