Application to Import Branded Cattle

SDCL 40-19-10.1. Requires persons to apply for and obtain a permit from the South Dakota Brand Board to import cattle branded with a brand registered in another state for the purpose of grazing or feeding.  It also requires a permit to brand livestock imported into or purchased within the ownership inspection area for feeding purposes with an out of state brand. Violation of this law is a Class 1 misdemeanor.

Should the livestock being brought into South Dakota carry a brand that is a duplicate of or in conflict with a registered South Dakota brand, the Board has the discretion to impose conditions on the permit or deny the permit. You will be notified if there are any concerns regarding your permit application.

If you are bringing livestock into South Dakota branded with an out of state brand, please complete the attached application for a permit and return it to the State Brand Board.
