Yesterday I saw my first Giant Swallowtail butterfly of the year. Here it’s feeding on black raspberry flowers. Papilio cresphontes

Papilio Cresphontes(Giant Swallowtail) -Male -Recto -Dane Co., WI, USA -(4.5 in wingspan). This is the largest butterfly in North America which can be over 7 inches in wingspan. It can be found through Mexico and as far south as South America and is also found in Jamaica and Cuba. The larvae eat mainly citrus plants and hence they can be a pest. The caterpillars have a camouflage from predators by closely resembling bird droppings.

The Giant Swallowtail (Papilio cresphontes) is the largest of all North American butterflies although female Tiger Swallowtails approach the same size.
