The Glorious Revolution of 1688 overthrew English Catholic king James II, who was replaced by his Protestant daughter Mary and her husband William of Orange.

William of Orange and Mary II Stuart. She was the oldest surviving child of King James II and Anne Hyde, and inherited the throne when her father was deposed. William was her cousin as well as husband, and they ruled England jointly and equally. They had no heirs, so their successor was Mary's sister, Anne.
