Mexicana Items Available Online

Select items from the Lou Emma Wilson Mexicana Collection have been digitized and are available online via ExploreUK.

The Lou Emma Wilson Mexicana Collection includes manuscripts, books, other printed materials, and photographs representing all aspects of Mexican culture from the 16th century through the present. This growing collection is made possible through a special endowment established by Dr. Alberta Wilson Server, Professor of Romance Languages at the University of Kentucky, in 1963 to honor her mother Lou Emma Wilson. More of the collection, including several rare books, can be found through the library catalog.

Recently Digitized University Archives Resources Now on ExploreUK

A wealth of UK-related materials has been digitized and added to ExploreUK

Learn more about one of the leaders of desegregating UK in the Wade Hall papers (dated 1876-1998, undated; 4.1 cubic feet; 9 boxes) comprise the research collected and writings by Bellarmine University professor Wade Hall about civil rights leader Lyman T. Johnson. Photographs, slides, and other visual materials related to Lyman T. Johnson were digitized.

UK daily news, events, and more are captured in the The Kentucky Kernel. The 1971-2008 issues were recently digitized and added to the 1915-1920 issues already online. Don't forget the Kernel's two preceding titles: The State College Cadet and The Idea.




The Terrence Fox University of Kentucky student protest film comprises two digital copies of what was probably an 8mm amateur, silent, color film of a protest by University of Kentucky students on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, May 5-7, 1970. Mechanical engineering doctoral student and later president of the Help Prevent Campus Violence/Student Coalition group Terrence "Terry" Fox filmed the protest. In addition to scenes of students gathering and marching at various campus, downtown Lexington, and Transylvania University locations with local and Kentucky state police and National Guard present (May 5-7), there are also scenes of the Tuesday night (May 5) fire and fire fighters at the Euclid Avenue Building/Air Force ROTC Building as well as scenes of the National Guard using tear gas on student protesters gathered around the UK Student Center on Thursday (May 7).

The University of Kentucky campus maps and guidebooks collection shows what campus looked like over time. It's incredible to see how the university changes and improves each and every year!

The Ohavay Zion Synagogue records (dated 1889-2019, undated; 8.1 cubic feet, 1.66 GB; 27 boxes, 1765 digital files) comprise administrative files, bulletins, yearbooks, newspaper and magazine articles, service and event programs, and photographs that document the history and development of Lexington, Kentucky's conservative Jewish congregation.

The Duncan, Foster, Gibson family papers (dated 1811-1985, undated; 12.4 cubic feet; 30 boxes) comprise correspondence, legal and financial papers, photographs, and ephemera, which document the families' daily life, economic influence, and personal opinions, especially surrounding hemp, cotton, and slavery, primarily during the 19th century.

The University of Kentucky Women's Forum records (dated 1988-2013, undated; 4 cubic feet, 920.96 gigabytes; 14 boxes and 1 oversize folder) comprise correspondence, bylaws, reports, spreadsheets, publications and newsletters, newspaper clippings, photographs, videocassettes, and audio documenting the establishment, the Board of Directors, committees, programs and events, and finances of this university organization dedicated to empowering and supporting women at the university.

The Joseph P. D'Andrea WWII refugee resettlement papers (dated 1936-2017, bulk 1936-1951; 0.25 cubic feet; 1 box) comprises records and publications related to D'Andrea's work as a United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) social worker in Austria after WWII.

The James B. Clay family diary and copybook (dated 1849-1881; 0.23 cubic feet; 1 box) comprises a diary documenting the journey of James B. Clay to Portugal in 1849 and a copybook kept by his son Thomas H. Clay and others.

The James Hines literary papers (dated 1925-2009; 3 cubic feet; 8 boxes) comprise manuscripts, published articles, song lyrics, and correspondence that document James Hines' literary career.

The Charles Eastin collection on Hamburg Place photographs (1909-1942, undated; 0.27 cubic feet; 8 items) comprises photographs and prints documenting horses from Hamburg Farm, Lexington, Kentucky.

The Louie B. Nunn papers (dated 1883-2004, bulk 1967-1979; 113.4 cubic feet; 298 boxes) consist of the campaign files, audiovisual material, press releases, photographs, county files, correspondence, memorabilia, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, and speeches generated by Louie B. Nunn during his term as governor of Kentucky as well as his later political career.

The Bell family papers (dated 1800-1937, undated; 1.08 cubic feet; 5 boxes and 1 oversized folder) consist of correspondence, financial and legal material, newspaper clippings, a scrapbook, and photographs that document the Bell and Sayre families of Lexington as well as their house known as Bell Place.


The Milton Metz films (dated 1971-1976; 2.3 cubic feet; 104 items) consist of 104 reels of 16mm color film produced for the WHAS Television, Louisville morning show Omelet.

The Special Collections Research Center collection on the University of Kentucky University Training School/University High School (dated 1920-2011, undated; 4.82 cubic feet, 18 boxes; 32.9 GB) primarily consists of publications, newspaper clippings, photographs and photograph albums, moving images, correspondence, memoranda, reports, and artifacts documenting the University of Kentucky University Training School and University High School (1920-1965), University High School reunions (1981-2009), and University High School alumni.

The Jackson family photographs (dated 1865-1961, undated; 0.07 cubic feet; 1 box) consists of photographs documenting the Jackson family of Johns Creek in Pike County, Kentucky.

The James J. Pollitte Mountain Parkway construction scrapbook and slides (dated 1959-1963; 0.3 cubic feet; 1 box) comprise newspaper clippings, correspondence, and photographic slides that document the plan and construction of the Mountain Parkway in Kentucky.

The Kentucky Nurses Association District 9 records (dated 1953-2010, bulk 1980-2006; 4 cubic feet; 13 boxes; 2 MB and 30 digital files) consist of meeting minutes, scrapbooks, membership records, financial records, and conference materials documenting the Union's operation and advocacy work.           

The Robert Jefferson Breckinridge religious oratory journal (dated 1821-1855, undated; 0.23 cubic feet; 1 box) consists of a bound journal of the politician and minister Robert J. Breckinridge's religious ideas.

The John R. Jones Diary (dated 1844; 0.1 cubic feet; 1 folder) consists of a journal kept by John R. Jones that documents his journey from Washington County, Kentucky to the Democratic National Convention of 1844 in Baltimore, Maryland.

The Martha Hume diary (dated 1895-1896; 0.02 cubic feet; 1 folder) consists of one notebook in which Martha discusses her daily life as a young woman in Lexington at the end of the 19th century.

The Harry O. Wyse memoir (dated 1993; 0.02 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprises a typewritten memoir that documents Wyse's early life in Canada as well as his later career as a contractor and engineer in Lexington, Kentucky.

The George W. Gallup Civil War diary (dated 1864; 0.05 cubic feet; 1 folder) consists of one diary that documents Gallup's journey to Atlanta as a lieutenant colonel in the Union Army under General Sherman during the Atlanta campaign.

The Robert Lee Bort WWII scrapbook and photograph album (dated 1942-1946, undated; 0.25 cubic feet; 1 box) consists of a scrapbook/photograph album documenting Bort's time working at the weather station located at the Sturgis Army Airfield in Sturgis, Kentucky, during World War II.

The Thomas Parrish papers (1914-2015, undated; 18.4 cubic feet; 27 boxes; 3.47 GB, 34 digital files) consist of the author's personal and professional digital files, correspondence, interview recordings, organizational records, photographs, research and subject files as well as drafts, manuscripts, and documents related to Parrish's published and unpublished works.

The Foley family genealogy collection (dated 1829-2015; 6 cubic feet; 6 boxes) primarily consists of 23 binders of family genealogical research documentation for the Foley family of Kentucky and Missouri.

The Maye Combs Morrison scrapbooks (dated 1935-1965; 2 cubic feet; 11 items) consists of eleven scrapbooks of Lexington, Kentucky newspaper clippings.

Henry Clay fugitive slave letter and broadside (dated 1817 October 14-18; 0.05 cubic feet; 2 items) consist of a letter and broadside written by Henry Clay concerning a fugitive slave named Isaac.

The James Benjamin Aswell diaries (dated 1918-1923; 0.01 cubic feet; 1 folder) are typed transcripts that chronicle two of his trips to Europe, one during World War I in 1918 and then again in 1923.

Alice J. Kinder and William M. Justice papers (dated 1904-1994, undated; 1.8 cubic feet; 4 boxes) consists of correspondence, manuscripts, scrapbooks, and printed materials pertaining to the life and work of Eastern Kentucky poet and author William M. Justice.

The Brent Yonts papers (dated 1981-2016, undated; 74 cubic feet; 71 boxes, 7 flat boxes; 429 MB, 480 digital files) consist of correspondence, greenslips, citations, office files, newspaper clippings, issue files, session bills, assembly documents, and memorabilia, which document Yonts' 20 years of service in the Kentucky General Assembly.

The James K. Patterson presidential papers consist of his personal and professional correspondence, speeches and notes, books, reports, documents and financial material associated with the Agricultural and Mechanical (A&M) College along with published materials and photographs.

The Walker family correspondence (dated 1917-1919; 0.2 cubic feet; 1 box) comprise of letters, photographs, and newspaper clippings sent to Dallas Walker documenting his service in the Ambulance Corps during WWI, and the Walker family professional and personal activities, including the family-run tobacco manufacturing company located in Covington, Ky, I.L. Walker Tobacco Company.

Newly Digitized Collections on ExploreUK

The John Brand letter books(dated 1811-1841; 0.1 cubic feet; 1 reel) consist of a microfilmed copy of two letter books belonging to Lexington hemp manufacturer John Brand.

The Lyman Copeland Draper letters to Reuben Thomas Durrett (dated 1882-1886; 0.1 cubic feet; 68 items) consists of letters from Draper to Durrett concerning their mutual interest in the settlement and early history of Kentucky.



The Gordon family papers (dated 1771-1924, bulk 1840-1859; 2 cubic feet; 4 boxes, 1 oversize box, and 1 folder) consists of the correspondence, papers, and a diary of the Gordon family of Georgia and Kentucky. The bulk of the collection consists of letters relating to Neal McDougal Gordon of Nicholasville, Ky., and his work in the education of Presbyterian ministers and the colonization of Liberia.

The Aden G. Lovell papers (dated 1882-1923, undated; 0.1 cubic feet; 3 reels of microfilm) consist of the microfilmed medical record books, receipts, account books, business ledgers, and legal and insurance papers owned by Mt. Vernon physician Aden G. Lovell.

The Charles E. Lowther collection on Mining (dated 1920-1977; 0.1 cubic feet; 1 reel) consists of microfilmed legal agreements between coal operators and labor, by-laws, an employee handbook, pay receipts, and union political ephemera.

The Joseph B. Mathews papers (dated 1890-1932; 0.73 cubic feet; 2 boxes, 1 wrapped item) of civil service files, a letter copying book, a letter, and two scrapbooks of newspaper clippings. The collection document Mathews work for the U.S. government, including his work as a railroad detective and a prohibition agent in New Orleans.

The Midwifery Collection (dated 1926-1932, undated; 0.45 cubic feet; 1 box) consists of reports and rules and regulations concerning midwifery in Eastern Kentucky during the early 20th century.

The William Jason Fields scrapbook (dated 1911-1923; 0.6 cubic feet; 1 box, 1 item) contains materials he collected during his years in the United States House of Representatives.

The Hathaway family papers are letters, scrapbooks, diaries, and general materials of Leeland Hathaway, his wife, Mattie Wheeler Hathaway, and daughter, Carrie Lee Hathaway.

The Thomas Henry Hines papers, (dated 1772-1954, bulk 1860-1889; 2.84 cubic feet; 10 boxes, 2 items, 3 folders) comprise letters, diaries, legal papers, manuscripts, maps, military documents, newspaper clippings, notebooks, handwritten notes, political papers, printed materials, realia, scrapbooks, and family papers, which document Thomas Henry Hines' career as a Confederate soldier, a Confederate spy, a lawyer, and a judge.

Barrow Unit papers 
The Barrow Unit papers (dated 1899-1957, bulk 1917-1919; 0.1 cubic feet; 1 reel) include correspondence, printed articles, newspaper clippings, official orders, and rosters documenting the military medical unit known as the Barrow Unit, which provided medical services in England to personnel of the United States Army during World War I.

William Sylvester Taylor papers 
The William Sylvester Taylor papers (dated 1899-1937; 0.1 cubic feet; 1 reel) consist of materials related to the Kentucky gubernatorial election of 1899 and its aftermath.

The Marlow Cook moving image and audio recordings
The Marlow Cook moving image and audio recordings (dated 1969-1974, undated; 1.25 cubic feet; 1 box, 2 items) consist of color and black and white 16mm films, reel-to-reel audio recordings and one 2-inch quadruplex videotape documenting the family life and political career of Marlow W. Cook (1926-2016), member of the United States Senate from Kentucky in the 91st, 92nd and 93rd Congresses (1969-1974).

Caleb Powers papers
The Caleb Powers papers (dated 1900-1941; 6 cubic feet; 9 boxes, 1 item) consist of materials relating to the third and fourth trials of Caleb Powers, which took place during 1903-1904 and 1907-1908.

Clinton Jones True papers
Clinton Jones True served in the Civil War as a captain in the 40th Regiment and a colonel in the 53rd Regiment of the Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. After the Civil War, True was appointed consul on the island of St. Thomas by President Ulysses S. Grant. After disappearing in the early 1880s, True was later declared legally dead. The Clinton Jones True papers consist of various military papers, correspondence, a copper engraving, and broadsides relating to the life of Clinton Jones True. Letters concerning health, money, and other personal matters from True to his wife, Harriet, comprise the bulk of the correspondence. 



UK Libraries Special Collections Research Center Digitizes Original Early English Romantics Manuscripts

University of Kentucky Libraries Special Collections Research Center recently organized and digitized the W. Hugh Peal Manuscript Collection, comprising approximately 7,000 items (43.94 cubic feet) of original letters and documents of English and American Romantic and early Victorian authors. The collection is available on the University of Kentucky digital library ExploreUK.

W. Hugh Peal (1989-1987) was a native Kentuckian, a lawyer and UK alumnus. He collected books, manuscripts and letters while a Rhodes Scholar in Oxford (where he obtained law degrees in 1924 and 1925) and continued during his law practice in New York City in the 1930s and 1940s. His collections, along with his acquisition books and journals, were donated to UK in 1981.
The Peal Manuscript Collection represents one of the strongest holdings of original documents of the early English Romantics in the United States. The core of the manuscript collection centers around the best-known Romantic authors, Charles Lamb (98 letters), Samuel Taylor Coleridge (51 letters), William Wordsworth (37 letters) and Robert Southey (64 letters and 16 manuscripts).

American authors comprise approximately 900 items, including Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) and William Dean Howells.
There are manuscript letters or poems by virtually every significant English author who wrote during the period 1790 to 1830. English Victorian era authors (1830-1900) are also represented, including several letters from Charles Dickens, as well as English writers from 1880-1940. 
In addition, there are letters and manuscripts by French authors and politicians, including Jean Jacques Rousseau, Voltaire and Alexis de Tocqueville.

The Eugene Erwin and William Russell papers (dated 1824-1868, undated; 0.23 cubic feet; 1 box) primarily consist of letters written by, to, or about Eugene Erwin and William Russell regarding various topics including family news, California, Henry Clay, and the Civil War.

The Lizzie Hardin diary, M-181
The Lizzie Hardin diary (dated 1850-1860; 0.1 cubic feet; 1 reel) consists of a microfilm copy of a diary kept by Lizzie Hardin of Harrodsburg, Ky. during the Civil War. Though she began the diary in Virginia, it was written primarily during the time she lived in Harrodsburg. In the diary she describes a raid near Harrodsburg by John Hunt Morgan in 1862 as well as other war-related incidents. At the top of many pages are portraits of soldiers that have been cut out of another source and pasted in the diary.

The Robert G. Wallis scrapbook (dated 1900-1911; 0.24 cubic feet; 1 item) consists of a scrapbook entitled Our Martyred Governor, William Goebel.


WBLG Audio Tape Collection, 74av03
The WBLG Audio Tape Collection (7 cubic feet, 97 items in 14 boxes; dated 1954-1977) is comprised of ninety-seven 1/4" reel to reel audio tapes. These tapes contain broadcasts of U.K. sporting events, political talks from around the Commonwealth, and a bi-weekly summary of the news events in Kentucky covering 1968-1977.

Newsletters produced by the Lexington, Kentucky based Pride Community Services Organization. Included are publications from the organization through multiple name changes, such as LinQ magazine (July 2013-2016); the GLSO (Gay and Lesbian Services Organization) News (August 1986-June 2013); the GSO (Gay Services Organization) newsletter (1979-July 1986).

The bulk of the papers consist of letters from Henry Clay to Francis Taliaferro Brooke, a prominent political figure and Virginia Supreme Court judge from Fredericksburg, Virginia.

The Bruce Ferguson scrapbook (dated 1900-1902; 0.1 cubic feet; 1 reel) was assembled by William Behringer and contains newspaper clippings about the assassination of William Goebel and subsequent political events. The clippings were mostly pulled from the Cincinnati Enquirer and Cincinnati Post and were pro-Goebel. The scrapbook also contains clippings about a Frankfort duel between Ethelbert Scott and Colonel D. G. Colson which left three dead, including Scott, and four wounded. The volume concludes with a number of engravings taken from a German language newspaper.
